Photo by Jerry L. Mount Elbert has a lot to be proud of: It is the highest mountain in Lake County, highest in Colorado, highest in the Rockies, and second highest in the contiguous United States.
The trailheads for routes are: South Mt. Elbert Trail Trailhead for the east ridge route, North Mt. Elbert Trail Trailhead for the northeast ridge, South Halfmoon Creek Trailhead for the northwest ridge, Black Cloud Trailhead for southeast ridge, and Echo Canyon Trailhead for the southwest ridge route.
Elbert is located in the Leadville Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest.

This is the story of a 65 year old Flatlander, in moderately good (but certainly not great!) physical condition who decided to attempt Mount Elbert (elevation 14,433 feet), the highest summit in Colorado and the second highest in the 48 contiguous States.
The Mount Massive Trail rises abruptly from the Colorado Trail, and after the first few hundred feet of elevation gain I realized that the cumulative exertion of the past week was catching up with me.
Next day they were planning to do Mount Bierstadt on their way to the Indian Peaks Wilderness, where they were staying for the second half of the week.

Elbert is second to Whitney in height in the Continental United States -- Whitney is only 61 feet higher (the Rockies are collectively higher than the Sierras).
Elbert also enjoys the historic importance of being at the headwaters of the Arkansas River which begins at its base by Leadville.
Of course there were spectacular views particularly of Mount Massive to the north (which was once considered the state's highest), the Arkansas River valley and Buena Vista to the south.

Mount Elbert is the tallest peak in Colorado at 14,440 feet and the second tallest point in the lower 48 states (California's Mount Whitney is slightly higher at 14,494 feet).
An interesting note is that Samuel Elbert was the son-in-law of John Evans, the second territorial governor of Colorado and for whom Mount Evans was named.
This trailhead is nicely nestled between Elbert and Massive (2nd highest peak in Colorado) and feeds the Northeast Ridge trail to Elbert's peak.

We arrived at the North Mount Elbert Trailhead just before 7 AM, and were greeted by an already nearly full parking lot.
Because the standard route on Elbert is a Class 1 walk up, we thought we'd spice things up by completing the descent on our unicycles.

The three primary trails are the Black Cloud Trail, South Mt. Elbert Trail, and North Mt. Elbert Trail.
I chose the North Mt. Elbert trail since it was closest to the town that I was visiting (Breckenridge).
The North Mt. Elbert trail has 5,000' of elevation gain over the course of 4.5 miles...so it is a relentless hike.

Roach says in his guidebook that this still rather distant view of Elbert may be discouraging, but I didn't really feel that until going over a couple false summits on South Elbert (14134ft), which I reached at 9:38.
Although 300ft lower than Elbert's main summit, IMHO this summit had the best views because you could see the rugged terrain around La Plata, which was mostly blocked by South Elbert when looking from Elbert.
At the saddle between South Elbert and Elbert there's a rockpile labeled as Point 13983, and because it was there, I veered off and up the talus to this very humble summit.

I simply pointed to South Elbert and Bull Hill stating that Roach has a route coming off of Point 13227 that ties back into the Mount Elbert Trail close to where he dropped his snowshoes.
