 California - Mount Hamilton
The Mt. Hamilton area is home to some of the state's finest oak woodlands, unique sycamore alluvial woodland and other native vegetation, such as cottonwoods and willows.
With California's population predicted to grow by 50% in the next 25 years, it is essential that the state's unique land and water resources be protected for the sake of our current plant, animal, and human residents as well as for future generations.
The Conservancy inaugurated the Mount Hamilton Project in July 1998, when it made the largest single conservation purchase in northern California history, acquiring two large ranches of 61,000 acres located in the foothills east of Mount Hamilton.

Although melanophlogite is considered to have a cubic structure, studies of material from two localities (Chvaletice, E. Bohemia, Czech Republic and Mount Hamilton, California) have shown the presence of a tetragonal superstructure (Zak, 1975).
Zak (1972) has shown by optical and single-crystal X-ray studies that cubes of the Chvaletice melanophlogite are composed of six pyramids, whose apices meet at the center of the cube; the pyramid bases constitute the cube faces.
The several California occurrences of chalcedony pseudomorphs after melanophlogite (described here) would strongly suggest that the number and type of stabilizing guest molecules were critical to the mineral's structural stability.
