 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hermon
In the Talmud and in the Targums Hermon is designated the "mountain of snow", and the same appellation is used by the old Arab geographers.
On the summit of one of the peaks is to be seen an extensive mass of ruins, probably the remains of an early pagan sanctuary dedicated to Baal, whence the designation Baal-Hermon, applied to the mountain in two Biblical passages (Judges 3:3; 1 Chronicles 5:23).
Some scholars think it probable that Hermon is the "high mountain" near Caesarea Philippi which was the scene of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1; Mark 9) and which by Luke, ix, 28, is called simply "a mountain".

The name of the new school was Northfield Mount Hermon School, and it retained both the original Northfield campus and the original Mount Hermon campus, making both campuses co-ed but segregating students by sex at the dormitory level.
In 2004, the Trustees of Northfield Mount Hermon School, forseeing difficult financial challenges, decided to close the Northfield campus in 2005 and to consolidate the school with a smaller coeducational student body on the Mount Hermon campus.
