The Mount Hope Bridge is a two-lane suspension bridge spanning the Mount Hope Bay in eastern Rhode Island.
The Mount Hope Bridge was constructed in 1927–1929 by Robinson and Steinman at a cost of US$5,000,000, and was owned by the Mount Hope Bridge Company as a private toll bridge until 1955, when it was purchased by the State of Rhode Island.
In 1971, the Mount Hope Bridge was considered for inclusion as part of the never-built Interstate 895.

The Mount Hope Bridge connects Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island - which originally was called Rhode Island - with Bristol on the original "Providence Plantations." It is located at one of the narrowest gaps in Narragansett Bay, and was the site of an active ferry service since the early 18th century.
The bridge was built by the firm of Robinson and Steinman, a partnership that was formed by bridge-building pioneers Holton Robinson and Robert Steinman.
In 1971, the Mount Hope Bridge and the proposed East Shore Expressway were considered as a possible corridor for the proposed I-895, a southerly bypass of the Providence metropolitan area.

The Newport Bridge connects Aquidneck Island to Jamestown on nearby Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, and subsequently to the mainland on the western side of the bay.
Additionally, the Mount Hope Bridge connects it to Bristol, and the Sakonnet River Bridge carries traffic to Tiverton over the Sakonnet River, the narrow saltwater strait on the eastern side of the island.

"Bridge of Hope" is a painting of this type, where I have no pre-conceived ideas, but rather a collection of spontaneous thoughts, which lead to the eventual composition.
For example the hands forming a bridge across the river were initially not connected to the face in the sky, but later when I decided to paint her shoulder, suddenly, one of them became her hand.
One interpretation could be, that mother nature is holding out the hand of hope to mankind, forming a bridge, which if we choose to cross will allow us to live at one with nature, and share the responsibility for ensuring the well being of the earth and all its wonders.

Construction began on May 7, 1927 and was well on its way when it was discovered that there was considerable breaking of the cable wires in the Mount Hope suspension bridge in Rhode Island, where the McClintic-Marshall Company was using the same heat-treated wires that the design for the Ambassador Bridge called for.
