Mount Jefferson is probably the hardest 4,000 footer in winter, due to the combination of considerable distance, elevation gain and exposure to severe weather.
Mount Madison in winter it is probably easier to do this in a day than to carry the extra weight needed for an overnight trip, but some people do spend the night at the Valley Way campsite.

Mount Jefferson, named after the third U.S. President, is the third highest peak in New Hampshire, in New England, and in the Northeastern United States.
Jefferson Ravine and Castle Ravine are two large, classic glacial cirques on the mountains flanks, and just south of the summit the broad, grassy expanse of Monticello Lawn breaks up the monotony of talus blocks that cover most of the upper mountain.
Jefferson is also the only 5000-footer in the Northeastern U.S. (outside of Washington with its road and train) that can be climbed with less than 3000 feet of vertical gain, using the Caps Ridge Trail from Jefferson Notch.

Mount Pleasant was renamed Mount Eisenhower after the president's death, and the frisky New Hampshire Legislature honored the state's only president, Franklin Pierce, by renaming Mount Clinton (nonono, not that Clinton) Mount Pierce in 1913.

During the early 1900s, Jefferson was a popular summer resort, boasting one of the five largest "Grand Hotels" in the White Mountains -- "The Waumbek," with 450 beds, but destroyed by fire in 1928.
Jefferson is located on U.S. Route 2 between Lancaster and Randolph, near the mid-point between the Vermont and Maine borders.
In the past few years, thousands of acres of Jefferson have been sold or donated by lumber and other private concerns to the White Mountain National Forest, the Randolph Town Forest (part of which is within the boundaries of Jefferson), the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge, or the National Audubon Society.

The easiest route is the Caps Ridge Trail, that starts from Jefferson Notch at an elevation of 3,008 feet (the highest trailhead in the White Mountains), which at 2.5 miles (one way) and with only 2,700 feet of elevation gain is the easiest route to any major peak in the Presidentials.
Winter conditions in the presidentials are harsh, and many would say that Mount Jefferson is the hardest of them all to ascend in winter.

It can be reached more easily by going to the top of Mount Washington by cog railway or a toll road, then hiking a little more than a mile down the ridge.
