The lives of Alutiiq residents of the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak were disrupted by the volcanic eruption of Mount Katmai in June 1912.
While a considerable portion of Kodiak's fishing fleet was destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami, the rebuilding of Kodiak city hastened its emergence as the "king crab capital." The canneries near Old Harbor and Ouzinkie, destroyed in the earthquake, were never rebuilt.
Includes discussion of involvement in commercial fishing, the Russian Orthodox Church, and disasters (1912 Mount Katmai eruption and 1964 earthquake and tsunami), along with profiles of Alutiiq villages.

Novarupta sits below Mount Katmai, which collapsed as a result of material being expelled from the volcano.
The lava dome that formed to plug the vent from which the eruption occurred is what is now referred to as Novarupta.

Katmai was thrust into prominence because of one catastrophic event: the eruption of Novarupta, near Mount Katmai, in June 1912.
It is an area of volcanic peaks and glaciers; summits within the zone range from the 3000 foot level to Mount Denison which, at 7606 feet (2318 meters) is the highest point in the park.
Most of the Natives who lived in Katmai, Kukak, and Douglas (Kaguyak) had, by this time, adopted a lifestyle which included summer work in the fishing industry, either at a fishing station or cannery.

At least 15 explosive eruptions from the Katmai volcanoes on the Alaska Peninsula are preserved as tephra layers in syn- and post-glacial (Last Glacial Maximum) loess and soil sections in Katmai National Park, AK.
Kaguyak's caldera-forming event (5.8 ka) generated a distinctive bright orange fine ash that is distributed widely throughout the Katmai district.
Several mid-late Holocene Glacier Peak tephras along with Mazama and Mount St. Helens Wn and P tephras were found in cores from Cooley and Rockslide Lakes in southeastern British Columbia, Canada approximately 300 km northeast of Glacier Peak.

Six more volcanoes, which have had no activity recorded in the last 200 years, are considered active: Mount Dension, Mount Stellar, Kukak Volcano, Kaguyak Volcano, Four-Peaked Mountain, and Mount Douglas (U.S. National Park Service, 1994).
Two crater lakes occur in the park: Katmai Crater Lake, which formed as a result of the 1912 eruption of Novarupta, and Kaguyak Crater Lake, which formed in recent prehistoric times.
In the valleys of Knife Creek and the Ukak River, innumerable small holes and cracks developed in the volcanic ash deposits, permitting gas and steam from the heated groundwater to escape.
