 Mount Katahdin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the sides of Katahdin are four glacial cirques carved into the granite by alpine glaciers and in these cirques behind moraines and eskers are several picturesque ponds.
Katahdin is part of a laccolith (an intrusion of magma underground) that formed in the Acadian orogeny, when an island arc collided with eastern North America approximately 400 million years ago.
Katahdin is also the name of a1914 steamboat (later converted to diesel) owned by the Moosehead Marine Museum that plies the waters of Moosehead Lake in northern Maine.

 Mount Katahdin
We arrived at the entry gate to Baxter State Park, home of Katahdin, at 5:30 am (you have to arrive early because once the parking lots are full the trails are closed for the day).
We had hiked 5.5 miles and gained 3,800 feet in 4 hours and 25 minutes, and as a reward the fog was moving off the summit and the views were opening up.
Katahdin is an awesome mountain and perhaps one day we will return and conquer the Knife Edge, but for now we are just happy to have stood on the top of Maine.

Even though the conditions on the summit of Mount Washington were similar to what we encountered on the saddle, they were not nearly as sustained.
If we had continued to the summit of Katahdin, we would have gotten the full force of the wind for 2 miles, with no rocks to shelter us.
