For example, both Mount Keira (Wollongong) and Mount Wellington (Hobart) feature prominantly in a number of Skinner Prout watercolours, and it is often difficult to distinguish between the two, as both possess prominent escarpment faces.

According to Brown and Kolenberg (1986), whilst the scene could well be near Mount Wellington, Hobart, the native huts are typical of those found in New South Wales and the mountainous escarpment is most likely that of Mount Keira.

The coastal plain is widest in the south and narrowest in the north—to the north of Wollongong it becomes so narrow that the coastal road precariously hugs a cliffline and the Illawarra Railway must go through several tunnels to reach the Sydney metropolitan area.
The Escarpment contains strata of coal measures, and the adit entrances to many coal mines have been established along the slopes of the Escarpment right throughout Wollongong.
Australia's worst coal mining disaster occurred in 1902, at the Mount Kiera mine when an explosion killed 96 men.

"Gateway to Mount Keira" or as it is also known "Wave" is the culmination to date of Flugelman's use of the wave shape in his art since 1973.
"Gateway to Mount Keira" is the last work to date using the wave form and is a more than an adequate summation of what Flugelman was trying to achieve with it in his painting.
It is both a framing device, it's monumental scale frames the landscape through it's negative space and it is a part of the landscape itself, resolving the disparity betwen figure and ground.

The Mt Keira and Mt Kembla areas described above are a part of the Illawarra Escarpment State Recreation Area, donated by BHP in 1980.

The death by drowning of a worker at the Mount Keira Reservoir in 1996 has resulted in Sydney Water Corporation and a subsidiary company being fined a total of $262,500 by the NSW Industrial Relation Commission sitting in court session.
WorkCover NSW told the court that a fitter employed by AWT died when a 500mm diameter main outlet pipe at the Mount Keira Reservoir which he was inspecting suddenly filled with water from the reservoir.
The man was not asked to enter the pipe, which was being examined for leakage, and the inspection was not part of his duties with AWT.

One of the boys, known only as MAH, today pleaded not guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to murdering ST at Mount Keira in Wollongong on October 21, 2000.
The pair used a large stick to smash ST in the back of the head, before tackling him to the ground, kicking and punching him in the head and ribs when he tried to run away.
Mr Roser said JK confessed to the murder on August 19, 2003, to clear his conscience and police then found ST's skeletal remains near the dam at Mount Keira.

Police investigations are underway into a fatal head-on crash between a car and a truck on Picton Road, north-west of Wollongong.
The accident happened two kilometres west of the Mount Keira turn-off shortly after 7:45am AEDT today.
The collision caused the car to split into two - the driver of the car was thrown from the wreckage and died instantly.

It said shortly before 9.30pm, the body of a 31-year-old woman from Unanderra was found at the base of the cliff and her four-and-a-half year old son was found about 15 minutes later nearby.
A Westpac Lifesaver rescue helicopter statement said it appeared the boy and his mother fell from the lookout, at the top of Mount Keira, shortly before 8pm.
The mother and boy are believed to be from Wollongong, the statement said.
