Picturesque Mount Kembla situated in attractive bushland just one and a half hours from Sydney was sighted by Matthew Flinders in 1796 and founded in early 1800 as a farming and orchard district.
Kembla School was built in 1895 and Mt. Kembla Hotel in 1890.
Kembla is the home of painters, potters and poets in a setting of beautiful bushland and wonderful scenery and can be reached by the map shown on the left.

The coastal plain is widest in the south and narrowest in the north—to the north of Wollongong it becomes so narrow that the coastal road precariously hugs a cliffline and the Illawarra Railway must go through several tunnels to reach the Sydney metropolitan area.
A large coastal saltwater lagoon called Lake Illawarra[?] is in the southern part of the city, separated from the Tasman Sea by a long sandy spit.
Just to the north of the lake is Port Kembla[?], a natural harbour that has been considerably expanded by human-made excavation and reclamation works.

Mount Kembla (IPA: [maʊnt kemblə]) is a mountain in New South Wales, Australia, as well a suburb of the City of Wollongong, which gets its name from the mountain.
Local Aboriginal legends told of Mount Kembla and Mount Keira being sisters and the Five Islands being daughters of the wind.
Mount Kembla is in the volcanic fold of the Illawarra escarpment, overlooking Wollongong.

The residential and industrial areas of Port Kembla are situated on 2200 acres of land granted to David Allen in 1817.
The new harbour was named Port Kembla by William Burall who opened the Mt Kembla Colliery and constructed the tramway between the colliery and the jetty.
The first shipment of coal from Port Kembla was on the 'S.S. Arawata' which took on approximately 2000 tons of coal on 27th February, 1883.

 Disasters - Mt.Kembla Colliery Gas Explosion - 1902
The MP for Wickham and former Minister for Mines, John Fegan, stated that Mt. Kembla had never been regarded as a 'fiery' or any way dangerous mine and was backed up by fellow MP for Shoalhaven, Mark Morton.
The Mine Manager, William Rogers, stated that the mine was "absolutely without danger from gases", the Illawarra Mercury reported that "gas had never been known to exist in the mine before" and the Sydney Morning Herald recorded "one of the best ventilated mines in the State".
Rather than holding any individual official of the Mt. Kembla Company responsible, the Commission stated that only the substitution of safety lamps for naked lights could have saved the lives of the ninety-six victims.

The area of subtropical rainforest around the peak of Mt Kembla (534 m) is a flora and fauna reserve'.The views from the lookout are quite exceptional and there are several fine bushwalking trails which start from that point.
The ring track (5 km) takes you past a pond constructed last century to supply water for the pit ponies, the entrance to a mine that operated from 1887-90 (entry is forbidden and life-threatening), an old cemetery with more graves from the 1902 disaster, and some old miner's huts built in the 1880s.

In 1883 the Mount Kembla Coal and Oil Company built a railway from Mount Kembla mine to the coast to ship its coal.  There was no natural harbour and the company constructed a jetty just north of Red Point naming it Port Kembla.
By the 1890's Port Kembla jetty was exporting significant amounts of coal and a plan for a deepwater port evolved.  This plan ultimately required the construction of the two large breakwaters which form the Outer Harbour as we know it today.
 The Port Kembla Harbour Act was passed on 23 December 1898, thereby formally proclaiming the area as a port and setting aside an initial £200,000 for breakwater construction.

This series comprises minutes of evidence, report and other records relating to the Royal Commission into the explosion which occurred in the Mt. Kembla Colliery, the property of the Mt. Kembla Coal and Oil Company Limited, on 31 July 1902, in which 95 persons were killed.
On 6 September 1989, the Minister for Minerals and Energy, established an inquiry under Section 21 (1) of the Energy Administration Act 1987, to investigate allegations that toxic material was deposited in the mine during the 1960s, and allegations that the incidence of cancer among workers at the mine was abnormal.
