Mount of the Holy Cross (snow feature), Castle Peak (castle-like rock towers on it's south ridge), Pyramid Peak (obvious), Redcloud Peak (red-orange rock at the summit), Snowmass Mountain (obvious), Capitol Peak (resemblence to Capitol Building), and Mount Massive.
Massive has the largest area above 14000ft in the continental U.S., and it's looooong summit ridge is the distinctive feature of the Leadville skyline.
I reached the junction where the Mount Massive Trail branches off at 5:50, and took a break about 15 minutes later near treeline at 11600ft.

At the top of the ridge, I was expecting a long haul to Massive's summit, but somewhat taken aback by the ridge separation.
On the left is a view of the remainder of the route to Mount Massive.
From the apex on the ridge from the Southwest Slopes, it took the better part of half an hour to reach the point where Massive's summit was the only objective left.

Our route was the standard from Mount Massive Trailhead and up the East slope described by Borneman and Lampert.
I would probably not have done it this way except that it was a new route for me. I had climbed Mount Massive before by the West Slope route described by Roach.
After turning onto the Mount Massive Trail, we started to encounter a few left-over snow drifts and the trail became muddy (11,400').

Towering just west of Leadville, are the two tallest mountains in the state - Mount Massive claims the title for being the second tallest at 14,421 feet while just south lay Mount Elbert, slightly taller at 14,433 feet.
You'll pass the Halfmoon campground at about mile five, however the trailhead to Massive is a little bit further down the road.

It would be more a test of physical and mental endurance than a test of mountaineering skill.

The mountain has five summits, all above 14.000 ft (4217 m), and a summit ridgeover 3 miles (4.7 km) long.

We had considered either the East Ridge or the Southeast Ridge Route, but the weather forecast wasn't that good, and afternoon storm activity was almost certain, so we chose the easier and faster East Slopes Route for this ascent.
Looking more to the south now, there's Mount Elbert (the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains) just coming out of the shadow of the passing storm, and La Plata Peak further back and to the right.
Heading home now, we stopped one last time for this shot from the road showing Point 13,630 on the far left, South Massive at 14,132 feet, the summit at 14,421, and North Massive to the right at 14,340 feet.

We followed the Colorado trail (topo map) around the west and then north side of Massive for about 3.2 mile before reaching the Mount Massive trail.
The trail was a steady uphill climb, but soon the saddle between South Massive and Massive was visable.

That is, on the trail, south of the expected waypoint.
After proceeding up the Mt Massive Trail, the course jogged back north and then west to the expected bearing.

Without either losing or gaining much elevation from this point, the trail brought us to the Mount Massive Trail junction at 8:00.
Here the trail again became steep, and we soon reached treeline, and a pretty, sloped meadow full of fall-colored grasses and dotted with patches of willows.
Now the goal was in sight: the Massive/South Massive saddle and the somewhat rocky ridge up to Massive’s broad summit were at the head of the basin.

The view from treeline is awesome - Massive is a huge mountain, and the tundra was green and flowery, with snowfields, rivers, and little ponds - it was very scenic.
As we got closer to the saddle between South Massive and Massive, I started feeling weary and dizzy.
And, my great Ohio-shaped rock is still on the summit of Mount Massive.
