In 1971, this neighborhood was designated an Historic District by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, one of the earliest landmarked districts in the five boroughs.
The rocky hill of Manhattan mica-schist that dominates Mount Morris Park was popular among Native American tribes as a look-out point from which one could see over the entire island.

Village of Mount Morris residents crowded into their Village Hall Thursday night to learn more about changes to their police force.
Mount Morris Village residents heard Deputy Mayor Frank Provo read Chief Sherman Yates resignation letter, but as far as why he was suspended prior to the resignation, the word to the standing room only crowd was no comment.
Village Trustee John Ladelfa said he believes it is in the best interest of the village that Sherman Yates resigned, and to keep details quiet.

The gallant Seventh Regiment of New York survived even into the 1990's before its dissolution was ensured by the monotony monitors who now, fifteen years later, seek to destroy the great and blessed monument of an armory on Park Avenue which the Seventh built and guarded for over a century.
It was in 1682 that James, Duke of York, as Lord Proprietor of New York, appointed Thomas Dongan to govern the bankrupt colony.
This would be because New York's first Catholic school was not in the 1800's during the republic's early years but in the 1680's when Governor Dongan established a college (in the secondary sense) under the guidance of three Jesuit priests, one of whom was his own private chaplain.

 New York Architecture Images- Mount Morris Park West
In the 1850's and, indeed, until much later, the streets in the District were unpaved and builders dumped surplus earth in the roads to improve the grading.
A property map of the area dated 1848 indicates that Morris Park West was called "The New Avenue." That map also explains the sharp diagonal of the boundary of the Historic District, established by the direction of the old Manhattan Road.
The 20-acre park was originally known as Mount Morris Park and was a public, residential square in 1839.
