 What's a Nittany Lion?
Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, the lion was designated as a Nittany Lion.
In regional folklore, Nittany (or Nita-Nee) was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed.
Penn State's Nittany Lion shrine was dedicated on Oct. 24, 1942, during Homecoming Weekend.

The origin of the name "Mount Nittany" is obscure, the most commonly accepted explanation being that it is derived of Native American words (loosely pronounced as "neet-a-nee") meaning either "single mountain" or a protective barrier against the elements.
The Nittany Lion is the mascot of the Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania in the United States.
In 1907, the first tangible lion symbols appeared with the placing of two alabaster African lion statues, left over from the Pennsylvania exhibit at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, atop the columns at the main campus entrance on College and Allen streets.

Mount Nittany is the first hike many people take in Centre County, PA. Its fame comes from the legend of Princess Nittany, and it is a landmark for the Pennsylvania State University, whose mascot, the Nittany Lion, is named for.

Mount Nittany in State College is a nice day hike since it's very steep and has a lo0t of nice views, but it's too populated to really enjoy the 'hiking experience'.
Shingletown Gap offers another nice vantage point to some excellent hiking, especially in the fall, but it too is quite popular, so you might want to explore some of the more off-beat trails from there.
There are thousands of miles of trails in Pennsylvania, and many of them are kept secret in Centre County, near State College.

Levdansky said Jefferson Hills officials wanted to submit their own suggestions to name two miles of the Mon-Fayette Expressway through their community, while a colleague, Rep. Tom Michlovic, D-Braddock, wants to name the toll road north of Route 51 after Medal of Honor recipients.
