Japan's Osore taisai festival by David Atkinson | Travel Reviews from Travel Intelligence
Here, half way up Mount Osore, a barren volcanic peak in remote Aomori prefecture, people are giving free reign to their emotions: wailing to the right of me, gnashing of teeth to the left.
Mount Osore (the very name itself means ‘fear’ or ‘dread’) is, to the Japanese, an earthly incarnation of Buddhist purgatory.
Japanese folk legend has long talked of Osore, with its surrounding smaller mountains resembling the eight petals of a lotus, as a place where restless souls wander the barren landscape.

Mount Osore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mount Osore (恐山 Osorezan) is a region in the center of remote Shimokita Peninsula of Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
The name literally means "Mount Fear", and according to popular mythology, Mount Osore marks the entrance to Hell, with a small brook running to the neighboring Lake Usorisan equated to the Sanzu River, the Japanese version of Styx, which all souls must cross on their way to the underworld.
The reputation is not unsurprising, given that the volcanically very active site is a charred landscape of blasted rock filled with bubbling pits of unearthly hues and noxious fumes.

Ivy incorporates four distinct ethnographic elements in establishing her thesis that Japanese 'culture' is being reappropriated in the modern age, its relations with the past stretched by the alienating influences of society and time.
These elements are: domestic travel campaigns; the work of Yanagita Kunio and his Tales of Tono; Mount Osore and the annual festival of the dead; and taishu engeki, folk theatre, sometimes referred to as 'third-rate kabuki'.
It is to the theatre or spectacle of the festivals of the dead at Mount Osore that Ivy next turns her attention, in the effort to substantiate her views that the past is 'vanishing' to be confronted by the fetishism of cultural reconstruction.
