 Geotimes - May 2002 - Geophenomena
Not since Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79 had anyone ever seen the kind of pyroclastic surge of hot gases that would rush over the port city of St. Pierre on May 8, at speeds between 130 to 150 meters per second, about 500 kilometers an hour, with scorching temperatures of 200 to 500 degrees Celsius.
For the last 70 years, Mount Pelée has rested dormant in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean — providing an excellent opportunity for volcanologists and tourists to clamber up its slopes and hike the trail to the summit.
One hundred years ago, government officials in Martinique made the mistake of assuming that, despite signs to the contrary, Mount Pelée would behave in 1902 as it had in 1851 — when a rain of ash from what they considered a benign volcano surprised, but did not harm those living under its shadow.

If the precatastrophic volcanic activity then shown by Mount Pelee were to occur today, modern volcanologists, having gained ninety years of cumulative experience since the 1902 eruption, would very likely urge immediate evacuation of the city regardless of other circumstances.
Gaston Landes, a professor at the high school in St. Pierre in 1902, said that ash and the sulfur smell from Mount Pelee would not cause great damage, and if the volcano erupted lava flows, they could not reach the city because too many ridges and valleys stood in the way.
Before the eruption, Mount St. Helens was one of the premier outdoor playgrounds in the state of Washington, being easily accessible to the major population centers of Portland and Seattle.

HawaiiNews.com: Chronology of a volcanic disaster
The north end of the island is dominated by Mount Pelée, whose name--"bald" or "peeled" mountain--refers to the scarcity of vegetation at its summit when French colonists arrived in 1635.
When Mount Pelée reawakened in 1902, citizens of Saint-Pierre expected the volcano to mimic its past sluggish behavior, and they assumed that their city offered a safe haven from any lethal volcanic activity.
The first eruption of Mount Pelée witnessed by colonists was phreatic (steam-driven) and occurred in 1792.
