Pirongia is a small town in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island.
It is 12 kilometres to the west of Te Awamutu, on the banks of the Waipa River, close to the foot of the 962 metre Mount Pirongia, which lies in a forest park to the west of the town.
Pirongia was originally named Alexandra but to avoid confusion with the town of that name in the South Island the name was changed to Pirongia.

Pirongia last erupted about 1.6 million years ago,and eruptions are known to have occurred some 2.7 million years ago.
Pirongia forest park now comprises 17,000 hectares of native broadleaf and podocarp (conifer) forest.It is the largest tract of unbroken native forest in the Waikato area and contains at least 58 species of trees,44 different shrub species and 110 types of fern.

Pirongia Park New Zealand, is densely forested and has an interesting plant and bird life.
The Pirongia Forest Park includes three extinct volcanos Mount Pirongia (959 metres), The Cone (945 metres) and Mount Karioi (756 metres).
If you want to spend the night on Mount Pirongia you can stay in the Pukatea Hut which is about 30 minutes walk away from the summit.

DOC's plant ecologist Andrea Brandon said many of the 150 caged plants were found to be flowering and in good heart, with no sign of possum or rat browse.
Especially pleasing was the discovery of eight new plants with flowers that had not been browsed.
Andrea Brandon said New Zealand's native short-tailed bat is known to pollinate dactylanthus flowers in Pureora and other parts of the country, but a survey for the presence of bats on Pirongia had proved unsuccessful.

It was much drier for the second pass through Pirongia West, so much so that the cars threw up trails of dust as they powered through the stage.
Despite the earlier wet conditions, rutting wasn't a major problem because the base layer of the road is quite hard under the loose gravel.

Coming up on the 30th of April we're having another field trip, this time to the southern enclosure at Maungatautari, so if you missed out on the one to Walter Scott Reserve, here is another chance to get out and about with your camera in good company.
Recently on the 1st of April a group of WPS members visited the Walter Scott Reserve on Mount Pirongia.
A great time was had, taking much longer than the 1 and a quarter hours the sign said it would.

Naming: At the request of the donors, Ellen and Lilian Valder, the reserve is named after Walter Scott, who gave the Valder sisters great assistance when they first took up farming in the area and who spent the greater part of his farming life in the district.
The reserve is situated on the southern foothills of Mount Pirongia at the intersection of Scott and Pekanui Rds off Pirongia-Kawhia Rd. It is 2kms west of Ngutunui and 27kms west of Te Awamutu.
What is now Walter Scott Reserve was originally part of land extending to the northern side of Scott Rd under the ownership of the Tangatahe family (Ani, Mariu, Moengaroa, Maata and Wiremu), who had a two-thirds share, and Hori Tauroa, who had a one-third share.
