Geophysical survey in 1969 identified entrances to the henge enclosure and a smaller inner henge enclosure at the south western end of 45 m diameter.
Excavation in the 1960s revealed little material in the henge ditch though some fragments of grooved ware and children's skeletons were found.
The henge enclosure is the typesite for the Mount Pleasant Period of the later Neolithic.

A henge is a man-made prehistoric structure dating from the Neolithic period and comprising a circular area delineated by a bank and usually a ditch, the bank being pierced by one or more entrances.
In the majority of henges the ditch is inside the bank but in the most famous henge, Stonehenge in Wiltshire, the 1.8 metre high bank was built inside the 2 metre deep ditch, although there is in addition a low counterscarp outside the ditch.
Henges are a phenomenon of and are widely distributed throughout the British Isles with concentrations near Amesbury in Wiltshire, the Mendips, the upper Thames valley, around Ripon in Yorkshire, the Moray Firth and the Boyne Valley in Ireland.

Henges are often regarded as a “hallmark of their age” (Harding and Lee 1987, 66).
The henge monuments found between within the Ure-Swale Catchment are the largest in the British Isles (with the exception of the four giant Wessex ‘henge-enclosures’; of Avebury, Marden, Durrington Walls, Marden and Mount Pleasant).
The investigations at the Southern Henge established the presence of internal features, consisting of low banks and posts, along one edge of its northern entrance, whilst geophysics at the Central Henge established the existence of a large anomaly (possibly a pit) within the southern entrance.

Henges are a widespread monument type of the third millennium BC, concentrated in particular regions, of which Wessex is one (Harding 1987).
Henges of the same dimensions as Cole Barrow exist at Maulden in Bedfordshire and at Westwall and Dorchester Big Rings in Oxfordshire (Castleden 1992: 14, 154, 160).
Variation among henges and hengiform structures has always been recognised (Wainwright 1969) and it is not easy to estimate standard dimensions for the internal earthworks, but a width of 5m for an external ditch, separated by a berm from a bank of equivalent width, would not be unlikely.

The bank is usually outside the ditch, and excavations at major henges such as Durrington Walls and Mount Pleasant have shown that substantial circular timber buildings once stood in the interior.
Henges are especially common in the lowland south and east of England, but are also found in the further west and north where they sometimes enclose a stone setting.............
Henges differ from stone circles in that the height of the surrounding bank will in most cases have created an enclosed space, hidden from the outside world, to which entry might have been allowed only to special individuals or on special occasions.

Mount Pleasant henge is one of the large Wessex henges and lies about a mile east of Dorchester.
