Some of them came from the Township of Monaghan, in the County of Ulster, and for that reason the name of Monaghan was given to this Township which was laid out by authority of the court at Lancaster four years before York County was organized.
Mount Pleasant Bethel was organized in 1843 in an old building opposite the hotel later kept by W. Burns in Siddonsburg.
The population in 1880 was 1,055 and it was 1970 before the Township's population returned to this level.

The program and the township are now in their second permit year, and so far the township has completed several of the requirements, including development of a public education and outreach plan and determination of where outfalls are located within the township.
The township also must begin testing the discharge at the outfalls to determine if any pollutants are entering the township's waterways at those locations.
In addition, the township must conduct awareness training for township employees and develop a pollution prevention plan as it relates to the maintenance, fueling and washing of township vehicles.

Franklin Township was formed on the last Tuesday of October 1785 during the quarterly session of the York County Court.
Perhaps the most well known piece of Franklin Township history is the story of Mary Jemison, who in 1755 was captured in Pleasant Valley by a band of six Shawnee Indians who were disturbed by the encroachment of the white settlers on their land.
In 1800, the population of Franklin Township was 1,023.
