By his mid-teens he discovered that he could not land a try-out with the Montreal Royal Juniors because the coach thought that he was too small.
O'Connor lead the Juniors with 15 goals and 22 points in 1934-35 and was promoted to the Royals Senior team for the Allan Cup playdowns, scoring a goal in the only game he appeared in.
The trio of O'Connor, Morin, and Heffernan were dubbed the "Razzle Dazzle Line" while with the Royals, but an injury to Morin near the end of the 1941-42 season ended their brief time together in the NHL.

 Fire demolishes Mount Royal Arena
 An early-morning fire on Tuesday ruined the Mount Royal Arena building, where the Canadiens played for six seasons before moving in 1926 to the Forum, their home for the next 70 years.
 The Mount Royal Arena was long ago changed from a rink to business premises but Jean Fortier, chairman of Montreal's executive committee, said it remained an important part of the past.
 He said in the Mount Royal Arena era, "they played a very short schedule," and the building didn't have the same significance for fans as the Forum.

Ottawa had a new arena, the Auditorium, and in an Ottawa win, Morenz scored his first of a career 270 goals in Ottawa's inagural game at the Auditorium December 26, 1923.
Howie Morenz was the star, scoring a hat trick in the first game, then another goal in the next game,which was transferred to Ottawa because of the slushy ice at Mount Royal Arena.
Morenz was levelled by Cully Wilson of Calgary and suffered a chipped collarbone, but it was all in vain as Montreal won.
