Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine began clinical trials on a unique and promising approach to gene therapy for colorectal cancer.
In experiments with laboratory animals, Mount Sinai researchers have demonstrated that their approach to gene therapy, known as tumor immunization, extended life in all animals tested and wiped out cancer entirely in up to 20% of animals whose cancer had spread from the colon to the liver.

In a case report in the June 27 issue of New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine prove that one of the virus's hiding places is the kidney.
The good news for this patient, and hopefully for others in the future, is that treatment quickly reversed most of the damage the virus had so far done to his kidneys and the level of virus in his plasma dropped to undetectable levels.
Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers previously demonstrated that the virus does indeed infect epithelial (membrane) cells in the kidney.

Financier Leon D Black has committed $10 million to Mount Sinai School of Medicine to establish the Black Family Stem Cell Institute.
