 Mundane Sounds
Towards the end of the song, Phil confronts and is then submerged by the "ball of fire." The hum of a multitude of amplifiers creeps up behind him, eventually erupting into a climax of feedback and distorted drums.
The song "Mount Eerie" can be divided into three distinct parts, and rightfully so, since each of these parts was written and recorded by different people.
Mount Eerie is a near-perfect symbiosis of words and music that restores a bit of dignity to the usually laughable concept of the "rock opera." After making music this unhinged, I am completely befuddled as to where Phil Elvrum could possibly go next without either artistically regressing or completely losing his mind.

The Pagan Pilgrim: Thomas Morton of Merrymount
'Mount Wollaston' was renamed 'Merry Mount,' or more accurately, 'Ma-re Mount,' as Morton spelled it, intending both 'merry' and a pun on the Latin word for the sea, this being a coastal settlement (Beston 1925).
There was likewise a merry song made, which, (to make their Revells more fashionable,) was sung with a Corus, every man bearing his part; which they performed in a daunce, hand in hand about the Maypole, whiles one of the Company sung and filled out the good liquor, like gammedes and Iupiter.
And this the whole company of the Revellers at Ma-re Mount knew to be the true sence and exposition of the riddle that was fixed to the Maypole, which the Seperatists wer at defiance with.

 Sermon for Christian Women's Retreat
This song of Psalm 118:14 is such a great song that it has two refrains, both of which are easy to remember and very enjoyable to sing.
There’s no other answer for questions like that than he had a song of joy in his heart, because he had the love of his Father in his heart, because he and his Father were and ever shall be one.
Our song of joy on the way to the Mount of Olives has a second refrain, one which lets us know why we can be certain that Christ’s strength is my strength.

Dawson's inspiration was a description sent in to the magazine by Mia Gomez ("Type A at the age of 5!") and the song first appeared on the CD enclosed with the Spring 2005 issue.
You probably already knew that he changed the name of his band from "The Microphones" to "Mount Eerie" (Mount Eerie was then the current Microphones album) and altered the spelling of his surname (originally Elvrum) to coincide with the Norwegian town (and from which, one presumes, his family originates).
The Soft and the Hardcore, her debut album for K Records, is a selection of short songs -- all but one of them are less than three minutes long -- that offer the kind of self-revelation that fans of Mirah yom tov Zeitlyn and The Microphones/Mount Eerie (Phil Elverum) have come to appreciate.

After the South surrendered to the Union, President Lincoln had the song played by the White House band in an effort to support the reunification of the United States.

In his last performance in Mount Vernon, it is reported that he cried when he was warmly welcomed and given a standing ovation as it's writer. It is still considered to be one of the top two or three songs associated with the history of this country.
However, it is unlikely that this could actually be the origin of the song since Manhattan Island has never been "the land of cotton"; in addition, Manhattan is clearly not "away down south".
