George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen (June 5, 1829 – November 29, 1921) was a Scots-Quebecker banker and railway executive in Canada.
George Stephen retired to England, where in 1891 he was awarded a barony, becoming the first Canadian to attain the status of peer.
Today, the Mount Stephen Club has a gourmet restaurant open to the public and the building is regarded as one of the city's most important heritage properties.

Stephen, in turn, was named Baron Mount Stephen in 1891 so in this case the mountain was named after the man and the man was named after the mountain.
The first ascent of Mount Stephen in 1887 was probably one of the longest and most difficult of the many first ascents made by surveyor James J. McArthur.

Of Scottish origin, Smith was a cousin of George Stephen, President of the CPR from 1881 to 1888.
He, together with Stephen and James J. Hill, was part of the original CPR Syndicate and their experience with the Saint Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway had shown him how vitally important railways were in opening the American west.
He was knighted in 1886 in honour of his executive role in the development of the CPR, and accordingly was created Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal.

At the ACC's first annual general meeting and mountaineering camp in the Yoho Valley in 1906, Kinney assisted in guiding nine club members the top of Mount Vice-President, the club's first official climb (in the early years, members graduated to the active class after making an ascent above 10,000 feet).
Kinney presided over a congregation at James Bay in Victoria in 1907 when he was asked to join Arthur P. Coleman, also a founding member of the ACC, and his brother Lucius, a rancher at Morley, Alberta, in an attempt on Mount Robson.
