Mount Stuart is the highest summit of the Stuart Range, and is one of the dominant landmarks of the Cascade Range, visible from nearly every high ridge and summit in the northeast and central Cascades.
The most popular route up Mount Stuart, the Cascadian Couloir, is the easiest, a long snow and talus gully on the SE flank of the mountain, which has been described by some as a wonderful climb and by others as an ugly, dirty gully.

We had visited Mount Stuart with Aaron Zabriskie back in May, and got a good look at the north side routes, but bad weather precluded a summit attempt.
The lower 1/3 of the Ice Cliff Glacier route is directly threatened by serac fall from the ice cliff and from accumulated ice on the north ridge of Mount Stuart.

However, ever since our previous attempt on Mount Stuart when we saw a huge avalanche sweep down the Ice Cliff Glacier, we had been a bit apprehensive about the route.
We met at 7 AM at the Burke Museum, and by 10:30 we were walking down the Stuart Lake trail.
Given the significant rainfall, we figured the snow-covered slabs above the Ice Cliff were in prime condition to avalanche; in addition, we figured the couloir at the top of the route was probably filled with new snow.

Mount Stuart lies within a large estate on the east coast of the Isle of Bute, 4 miles (6 km) SSE of Rothesay, opposite Great Cumbrae Island.
The house, which is the seat of the Stuarts of Bute, was originally built by Alexander McGill (1716), remodelled by George Paterson (1780) and completely rebuilt following a fire by Rowand Anderson between 1879 and 1903.
The 6th Marquess of Bute (1933 - 1993) undertook a major renovation programme at Mount Stuart and transferred ownership of house and surrounding estates to a charitable trust to secure their future.

I arrived at Theron's house Tuesday at 3:30 in the afternoon, fresh from a red-eye trip to Houston.

Michael and I planned on doing Mount Stuart's classic North Ridge last year, but fires had closed access to the trailheads and thus we ended up going to West McMillan Spire.
We'd talked about Stuart Pass or Goat Pass, but Ingalls Lake was definitely the best with its abundant supply of water and numerous choices for camping.
As we took off, I was able to identify close peaks like Mount Si and The Tooth as well as the usual familiars to the north.

Finally we climbed past ice blocks on the Stuart Glacier to the base of the couloir.
It was especially bad, and after a few nerve-wracking occasions of a balled-up foot slicing through the snow I had to stomp out a platform to remove my crampons.
It was an awesome perch, looking down on Stuart Lake and across to the craggy North Ridge.

A Pre-School opened at Mount Stuart in 1948 and after using two temporary sites the present Kindergarten in Raymont Terrace was opened in 1955.
In 1993 the Kindergarten became part of the Primary School and the total enrolment was about 215.
