Mount Thielsen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mount Thielsen is a stratovolcano in southern Oregon that has been so deeply eroded by glaciers that there is no summit crater and the upper part of the mountain is more or less a horn.
The reason for this is two-fold; Thielsen is a relatively old Cascade volcano and it stopped cone-building eruptions relatively early.
West of Thielsen is Diamond Lake and west of the lake is Mount Bailey (a much less eroded and younger stratovolcano).

 Wikipedia: Mount Mazama
Relatively few of the cone-building eruptions issued from the same vent, resulting in a ~11,000 foot (~3250 meter) high complex structure made of overlapping composite cones and shield volcanoes.
Hundreds of square miles of the surrounding countryside were destroyed by material ejected from the collapse and associated eruptions.
One pyroclastic flow traveled 40 miles (64 km) from Mazama down Rogue River Valley while another moved north in-between Mount Bailey and Mount Theilson, moving over Diamond Lake (it finally came to rest in North Umpqua River valley).

Whitebark pine is generally encountered as a pioneer tree, as there are several places around the caldera rim where old mothertrees provided a favorable microclimate for the establishment beneath their canopy of subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) or mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana).
In southern Oregon, the whitebark pine may have disappeared on Mount Ashland in recent times and is presently almost gone from the top of Crater Lake's Wizard Island.
