Karez is an underground canal dug by local people to channel off snowmelt from the Mount Tianshan to vineyards.
When it flows to the old man’s manor, the underground channel becomes an open irrigating canal, but still with the coldness of snow water from Mount Tianshan.
When a Karez is properly tended the fresh cold water of Mount Tianshan flows through vineyards and poplar trees while fruits, vegetables and mutton flourish by the waters.

Campsites on Mount Everest are marred by discarded mountaineering detritus and suffering under thousands of tourists' boots every year.
A primary cause is the warming global climate, but the research party concluded that the growing effect of tourism was also critically taxing the region surrounding the mountain.
Prakash Sharma, director of Friends of the Earth Nepal, believes that, while many of the Western charity groups that trek to the foot of the mountain may be doing so for honourable causes, they are not considering the environmental consequences.

The No.1 glacier of the Tianshan Mountains melts due to global warming and other factors with its boundary is shrinking by about eight meters annually, according to observation by scientists.
Glaciers are affected by two climatic conditions: snowfall, which adds to their mass during the winter, and warm temperatures, which spur melting in the summer.   The amount of snow falling in the Northwest is declining, while temperatures are rising.
There are exceptions.   Glaciers on California's Mount Shasta, at the southern end of the Cascade range, have been growing, Mote said.   Recent studies indicate that glaciers also might be growing in the Himalayas and other Asian mountain ranges.
