West Gippsland extends from the southeastern limits of metropolitan Melbourne and Western Port Bay in the west to the Latrobe Valley in the east, and is bounded by the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the Mount Baw Baw Plateau in the Great Dividing Range to the north.
Apart from gorges and southern slopes, this park is in a rain-shadow area forming the southern border of the Monaro Tableland.
Errinundra National Park is much wetter - inaccessible from June to October in most years - and features some of the most ancient forests in Australia, a matter of controversy as employment in the remote areas east of the Snowy is mainly dependent upon timber milling.

 Letchworth State Park
One might divide the park into three manageable birding zones: the east side of the gorge, consisting of old farmland and grasslands along River Road; the west side of the gorge, which consists of the brushy, shrubby north end; and the flora/faunally rich, maturely forested south end.

Mount Tam, thought to have been in existence for over 50 million years, has been providing shelter and sustenance for those who share its surroundings.
The TCC raised $30,000 in 1928 to purchase the land to donate it to the state.
In 1931 the park officially opened, encompassing over 6,000 acres covering the south slope, the ridgeline and a portion of the west slope.

 The Bedrock Geology of Mount Battie, Camden, Maine
Mount Battie is a rounded, rocky knob that juts from the south end of the Camden Hills (Figure 2).
The reason that Mount Battie is such a prominent knob is that the quartzite is more resistant to erosion than the surrounding rocks.
To the north and east, starting about at the parking area at the summit, the Battie Quartzite is a layered rock, with layers of conglomerate alternating with layers of quartzite.

From later statements it is evident that the Cooperative Campers maintained at least one camp in the park each season at Summerland, and probably the NPS chose to tolerate the group as long as it limited its activities to the east side of the park (away from the RNPC's hotels and camps).
Cammerer insisted that for the remainder of the season the park staff was to refuse official permission for use of the camp to all unlisted members, and it would keep a record of all violators.

The Park: There are supposed to be several trails passing through the Park although they are not obvious and it is possible to walk almost anywhere.
Wilderness: The land west of the park is part of the San Rafael Swell and is like much of south Utah as it is remote but beautiful, and traversed only by a few dirt tracks; 4WD vehicles are recommended.

Mount Rushmore was one of my favorite highlights of the summer.
This park is another one that I would highly recommend.
They're all painted grey, and are arranged in a circle, supposedly with the same dimensions as Stonehenge (the one in England).

 Utah - Escalante State Park
A sizeable area is found near Escalante, spread over the edge of the plateau just northwest of town and has been protected since 1963 as a state park, which also includes a small reservoir - a noted birdwatching location, and a 22 site campsite.
A short trail winds past many of the fossilised samples, and a pleasant hour can be spent wandering amongst the colourful rocks, in addition to which the area is also noted for Fremont Indian relics, 1,000 year old petroglyphs and dinosaur bones dating from the Jurassic period.
Both parks have similar cautionary tales about the ill fortune that befalls those who illegally remove samples, with a collection of letters sent from remorseful visitors.

 Trip to Mount Katahdin, Baxter State Park, Maine, USA.
I arrived at the south gate of Baxter State Park at 8:30 am and was told that the parking lots for the hiking trails leading to Mt. Katahdin were already full by 7:00 am that morning!
Motorcycles and large vehicles are not allowed in the park and the speed limit on the tote road is about 20 mile per hour.
