We had decided to bird the mountains since there was no shore migration happening, and Kawada-san began by driving me to a Shinto temple in Kakegawa, where he grew up (he's now 45) where Ural Owl and sometimes Brown Hawk Owl are found.
We drive up a mountain called Sobatsubo, still in Shizuoka prefecture, where we sleep in a recently built "Mountain Lodge" which is a concrete foundation/floor and a raised polished wood U-shaped platform where you put your pad and sleeping bag and some toilets outside.
We heard a Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo and coaxed it down from the mountain, and it turned out to be a family of three who flew right over our heads and perched down the road.

Fall is traditionally the time to enjoy raptor migration in Pennsylvania, and sites on the Kittatinny Ridge (Blue Mountain) in southeast PA are well known for their annual fall migration counts.
Hawk Mountain near Kempton, PA, and Audubon's Waggoner's Gap Hawkwatch north of Carlisle are two of the best ridgetop hawkwatches in the eastern U.S.; Waggoner's Gap in particular is excellent for golden eagles in late October and early November.
However, organized hawkwatches on adjacent ridges to the west (Bald Eagle Mountain) and east (Stone Mountain and Jacks Mountain) show that thousands of raptors are migrating south along the local mountain ridges each fall.

This year's DVRC Member's hawk watch was scheduled for Saturday September 17, 2005, but due to a cold front pushing through the area bringing rain and poor hawk watching conditions, it was postponed until Sunday.
While waiting for everyone to arrive, most were treated to a view of an adult Bald Eagle sitting in a tree across the lake.
After close up views of the Red-tail, a Kestrel and a Broad-winged Hawk, it was time to tour the center to see the rest of the birds.
