		The village of Mountain Iron is known as the "Birth-place of the Mesabi." It currently has a population of 2,000 and is the home of U.S. Steel's MINN-TAC, the largest taconite processing facility in the world.
		From 1889 to 1892 Mountain Iron was an exploration camp "beyond the fringes of civilization." Wilbur Merritt, a teenager, had charge of the camp store, and in 1891, when the Merritts were exploring at Biwabik, he had charge of the company office.
		During the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of iron ore on the Mesabi Range, a ten and one half foot granite and cement statue of Leonidas Merritt, leader of the Merritt family, was unveiled.
