 Grandfather Mountain Marathon - Race Details
It seems to me that this marathon has the 'feel' of a trail marathon even though almost every step is on the roads.
It is advertised as a challenging marathon, and it is. Challenging means hills, sufficient but not excessive aid stations, and little fan support.
The Grandfather Mountain Marathon in my opinion is one of the finest marathons in the country.

The Karrimor International Mountain Marathon (or KIMM) is a 2-day Mountain event first held in 1968 and continuing today.
Gerry Charnley, a skilled mountaineer and orienteer, designed the KIMM to test orienteering skills in extreme circumstances; the full-length KIMM course is a double-marathon length race and is held in a mountainous region.

The Seward Mountain Marathon is an unusual distance race for runners in that it is a race to the top of a mountain and then back down.
With the top of the mountain's elevation being 3000 feet, Runners must climb a mile and a half up, and then descend the mountain at the same distance.
The view from the mountain overlooking the town of Seward and Resurrection Bay is absolutely gorgeous, but most competitors don't waste any time trying to soak in sightseeing; they just want to get to the finish line before everyone else.

The marathon itself was fairly enjoyable because of the nice weather (55-73 degrees with a fairly cool headwind most of the way) on a mostly shaded and beautiful tree-lined course.
She was trying to break 4 hours for the first time at this marathon.
When she found out I was a “fifty-stater” (trying to run a marathon in all 50 states), she told me that fifty-stater’s probably shouldn’t try this difficult marathon since it has a 5-hour time limit.

Follow the ancient trail to where it joins the pipeline trail and turn right on the pipeline trail (this is where the full marathon trail rejoins.) After cresting a couple of hills, look for a not-obvious left turn (marked with ribbons) onto an overgrown trail.
