Mountain gun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mountain guns are artillery pieces designed for use during mountain combat.
They are similar to infantry support guns, and are generally capable of being broken down into smaller loads (for transport by horse, human, mule, tractor, and/or truck).
Mountain guns are largely outdated, their role being filled by mortars and wire-guided missiles.

Artillery - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Cannons or guns (such as infantry support guns or those on a naval ship) are typically longer-barreled, low-trajectory weapons designed for a direct-fire role.
The FDC will transmit the fire order to the guns, specifying the number of volleys, a particular shell and fuze combination, the specific charge, a deflection (horizontal direction) and quadrant elevation (vertical direction) both specified in mils, and any special instructions, such as to wait for the observer's command to fire relayed through the FDC.
In addition, if guns in more than one location are firing on one target, with careful timing it can be arranged for all their shells to land at the same time for the same reason.

Battery B, 4th U.S. Light Artillery - The Mountain Howitzer
Mountain howitzers were mostly used in small skirmishes, scouting expeditions and cavalry raids, although they did see action in a few of the most famous engagements of the war.
Because mules were nearly always used to carry mountain howitzers by packsaddle, companies with these little guns were sometimes called "jackass batteries." If the terrain permitted, the mountain howitzer could be mounted on its carriage and drawn by means of a pair of shafts by one of the mules.
Mountain howitzers figured prominently in several Indian battles fought during the Civil War years, from fighting at Fort Ridgely, Minn., during the 1862 Sioux Uprising to the infamous Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado in 1864.

Nevertheless, in 1909 the gun was accepted into the inventory with the consideration that during fighting in the Caucasus and Turkestan, mountain batteries were practically never packed onto animals—wheeled transport was preferred even on mountain trails.
In August of 1914, 45 batteries of mountain artillery and 12 batteries of mountain horse-artillery were armed with 408 3-inch mountain guns of the 1904 and 1909 models.
