		Mettupalaiyam - Ooty - It was in 1854, that the first plans were made to build a mountain Railway from Mettupalaiyam to the Nilgiri Hills.
		It was operated first by the Madras Railway under an agreement with the Government.
		The Madras Railway Company continued to manage this railway line on behalf of the government for a long time until the South Indian Railway company purchased it.

	Nilgiri Mountain Railway
		This railway, which starts at Mettupalayam at the foot of the Nilgiris and terminates at Ootacamund, covering a distance of about 45 kms, takes its course through a rugged and densely wooded mountainous terrian, most frightful and forbidding in certain places.
		The earthwork in the construction of this railway line was done by the old 61st and 64th Pioneer, later known as Sappers and Miners of the Madras Army.
		The mountain railway was completed only upto Coonoor from Mettupalayam by June 1899 by the Madras Railway Company a British firm under an agreement with the Government of Madras.

		The Smoky Mountain RR charter was given to the new owners ($75,000 stock) and the old KS&E was operated by T&NC (under a $6,000 a year lease) along with two other separate branches.
		The first ran from Newport, TN to Crestmont, NC, and the second ran from Andrews, NC to Haysville, NC. Newport was 24 miles northeast of Sevierville and lcl shipments were handled between those two towns using motor trucks on the local roads.
