It has a town centre, a marina, a theatre and a major campus of the University of Ulster (opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969).
It is also the location of the 200ft Mountsandel mound, where wooden houses dating from about 7000 BC were uncovered.
It also has the headquarters of Coleraine Borough Council.

The Lower Bann and its banks reveal a particularly interesting story of early man in Ireland and some of its buildings dating from plantation times are of particular interest.
Mountsandel at Coleraine is the site of the oldest human settlement so far recorded in Ireland.
These Mesolithic people lived as hunter gatherers 9,000 years ago and were drawn to the Lower Bann as a prolific source of salmon and eels.

One of the earliest Mesolithic sites was found at Mountsandel in Coleraine.
Flints had been found in the area during the 1880s by William Gray, and a rescue excavation was carried out in the 1970s when the land was scheduled for development.

RESIDENTS IN the Mountsandel neighbourhood of Coleraine have voiced their disgust and outrage at a proposed plan to build 14 new houses in the area despite encroaching upon the oldest known historical settlement in Ireland.
The Mesolithic settlement, as well as Mountsandel Fort, which lies yards away from the proposed housing development, were both used by settlers up until the 1600s.
The field itself has also been an established right of way for the general public for over 25 years as an entry point into Mountsandel Forest.

A public consultation meeting on ideas for the promotion and development of Mountsandel mesolithic site will be held in the Lodge Hotel at 7.30pm on Wednesday 14th May.
It is unlikely that a visitor attraction would be built on the site because of restricted access and parking.
The meeting is purely a discussion around interpretation and promotional ideas that would enhance the profile of Mountsandel for the local community and for visitors to the area.

The earliest evidence of man in Ireland was uncovered at Mountsandel, near Coleraine in Northern Ireland, about 30 years ago during excavations by distinguished archaeologist, Dr Peter Woodman.
Recently a steering group made up of experts from the Environment and Heritage Service, the Forestry Service and representatives from the local community was set up to consider its future potential.
The Mountsandel site dates back around 9,000 years and the archaeologists found fish vertebrae, apple seeds, wild pig bones, hazel nut shells and water lily seeds.
