Doom-metal.com: Reviews - Mournful Congregation(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The Australian MournfulCongregation combines the mournful 'feel' of early MDB with the self-willed, dissonant and bleak nihilism of Thergothon.
MournfulCongregation celebrates a decade of Doom this year and this will be accompanied by an all new full length later this year.
Originally supposed to be released in late 2003, MournfulCongregation's latest is finally released on CD and 2LP by their standard release channels, Weird Truth and Painiac.
Australian MOURNFULCONGREGATION's contribution is "The epitome of gods and men alike", which must be their best track to date, containing all their trademarks in utter perfection.
Especially the well executed solo spot is awesome and captures a mournful sense not very common theses days.
WORSHIP's song is accurately titled "Let there be Doom..." which, according to the late Maximilien himself, should be "worse than ever", whereas I say, that it again meets the by now well-known standard of this German/French lunatics.
Recorded between 1997 and 1998, Australian MOURNFULCONGREGATION's lamenting dirges are nearly drowning in a tub of melancholy and hopelessness.
Although having a growling vocalist, I'd dare to say, that MOURNFULCONGREGATION are not to be mistaken as just another Death Doom act, as there is definitely more to them than meets the eye.
Sometimes reminding me of slower early MY DYING BRIDE (without the violin of course!), though much darker and more accomplished, those guys know how to push the right buttons to make even long songs appear fairly interesting, by incorporating twisted twin guitars as well as moving acoustic parts among other ingredients.
A full length album is being completed and a split EP with Brisbane's Invocation has been released.
Chrysalis left the band in 2000 and Stargazer is currently in hiatus with both remaining members featuring prominently in several other bands including Martire, Misery's Omen, Intellect Devourer and MournfulCongregation.
Related entries: Intellect Devourer, Martire, Misery's Omen, MournfulCongregation, Oni, Zemial.
Long term our aims are probably the same as most other bands- record more, play more and generally expand on the interest and recognition of the music we create.
The main difference between the three bands is the type of music each one plays.
MournfulCongregation is exremely doom metal whilst In Eternal Abyss has a "Cold Meat Industry" feel to it.
HM-3009 - Akelarre/Regressor(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
This collection from cult funeral doom fiends Archaic features both the "Akelarre" and "Regressor" recordings, the first being in the same vein as MournfulCongregation, the latter being closer to Worship in style.
Personally, I rarely have the patience for the loitering tempos of the Funeral Doom genre, but it has its place when I swing into a particularly bleak mood.
Worship or MournfulCongregation come to mind and Archaic reminds me a little of both.
According to Metalunderground.com, MOURNFULCONGREGATION is currently in the process of recording a new track for a split 7" record with fellow Australian doom metal band STONE WINGS.
This is the funeral doom band driven by FUNERAL drummer Anders Eek.
The artwork for this release will be handled by Away of VOIVOD fame.
Future materializations are to be viewed exactly as they are: footnotes of continued progress.
Daemora wholeheartedly endorses the following bands: November's Doom, MournfulCongregation, Umbra Nihil, Aarni, Worship, Tyranny, My Dying Bride, Theatre Of Tragedy, Shroud of Bereavement, Moonspell, Maudlin Of The Well, Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Trouble, Candlemass, and Type O Negative.
To this list could be added thousands, so an apology is extended to those that have inspired but were not named.
