Mouse Hunt is actually "darker" than you might think-- making it more of a treat for discerning adults but perhaps also making it inappropriate for really young children (although the shrieks of delight from every kid at the screening I attended suggest I should just lighten up).
That said, Mouse Hunt is a very fun ride, featuring brilliant comic acting by Nathan Lane and Lee Evans, a Laurel and Hardy for the 90's, as the Smuntz brothers, whose good fortune in inheriting a house created by an historic architect is severely tempered by a pesky mouse out to defend his turf.
The mouse, though a fraction of the size of a T-rex or an alien bug, is a dazzling achievement in special effects, the most well-executed of the year.

First, however, they have to get rid of the mouse and that turns out to be the challenge of their lives.

Ultimately, during the final encounter with the mouse before the House Auction, Ernie and Lars use a shotgun to accidentally shoot Caesar's obscured flea-bomb (Ernie was aiming down a hole in the floor that the mouse had gone through) and the ensuing explosion makes a massive hole in the floor.
During their secret antics with the mouse during the auction, Lars and Ernie attempt to flush the mouse from the walls using a garden hose, leading to major wreckage of the house on the eve of it being auctioned off.
All the mouse's antics throughout the movie would therefore have been done for the sole purpose of bringing them to the factory and showing them that they can bring their two obsessions together (cooking and string), thus bringing them closer.

The film is one bungled Smuntz brothers attempt after another to kill the mouse and the mouse one upping them with a flair worthy of Machiavelli.
There's no doubt that this mouse, adorably played by a crack team of trained rodents and one puppet, could take out the Smuntzs in the twitch of a whisker, but he's having too much fun toying with them.
"Mouse Hunt" may be too violent for younger kids, but it does have a sweet moral about working and playing well with others for balance and some of the best and most meticulous slapstick since Mack Sennett and Buster Keaton.

Mouse Hunt's rodent isn't evil in a bad way, mind you, just with a touch of malice aforethought.
They're obviously strip-mining territory first plundered by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy (at one point, a flustered Lane gives a pair of buxom beauties the old necktie waggle), but Mouse Hunt is so spastically inventive that it's more of a homage than outright theft.
The real stars of Mouse Hunt, though, are the animatronic and computer-generated mouse effects by Stan Winston and Rhythm and Hues, respectively.

I know I make every effort not to make comparisons with What Has Come Before, but the creators and stars of Mouse Hunt are living in deep denial if they think that anyone over the age of 15 or so won't make the connection to classic Laurel and Hardy movies.

People who don't hunt sometimes imagine all hunters as backwoods bubbas or weekend warriors from the city who can't shoot straight.
Hagberg, as the Los Angeles Times noted, worked a computer mouse with his mouth and tongue on Saturday, April 9, to shoot at an antelope on a game reserve near Boeme, Texas, while lying in bed in Ligonier, a town in northeastern Indiana.
Shooting animals through an Internet connection might seem distasteful to those who oppose hunting on moral grounds to begin with, but using a broadband connection to bag game isn't any better or worse than doing it in person.
