Movellan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Destiny of the Daleks, it was revealed that the Movellans encountered the Daleks while both sides were expanding their interstellar empires beyond the bounds of the galaxy and immediately engaged in a war which lasted for centuries.
Curiously, although the Movellans had indicated their ambition not just to defeat the Daleks but to also conquer the galaxy, the results of the Movellan victory were never alluded to in the television series, nor was there any indication that they continued to conquer new territories.
In the spin-off novel War of the Daleks by John Peel, it was claimed by the Dalek Prime that the Movellans were actually the creation of the Daleks themselves and that the war was faked as part of an elaborate plan to prevent the destruction of Skaro as recorded in history.

Wired 13.10: R Is for Robot
Movellan has experienced this frustration himself: "We tested our expression recognition system against the standard data sets in the field, and we were getting performance on the order of 97 percent, better than anyone else in the world.
Movellan is not the first AI researcher to propose this approach.
Movellan was too embarrassed to mention the incident to his colleagues, but later, he confided his experience to some neuro-scientists.

 A human touch for machines
There is no quick way for Movellan to say, but somewhere in the trillions of bits of information stored in his computer, he is convinced, there is an answer.
Movellan is part of a growing network of scientists working to disprove long-held assumptions that computers are, by nature, logical geniuses but emotional dunces.
For Terry Sejnowski, director of the Institute for Neural Computation at UCSD and Movellan's mentor, the pursuit of emotion machines began a decade ago when he viewed Sexnet, a program designed to distinguish male from female faces that had been stripped of cultural cues such as hair and cosmetics.

Movellan cited an aural illusion, called the Mcgurk effect, whereby a speaker says "ga" but with his lips forms "ba." The listener invariably hears something in between, usually "da."
By correlating the movement of pixels with the sound waves, it is possible to put closed captions beneath the current speaker in, say, a panel discussion, rather than just running them on the bottom of the screen and leaving it up to the user to figure out who is saying what.

The Movellans were a race of lithe androids with a penchant for silver dreadlocks.
For centuries the Movellans fought a war with the Daleks, their battle fleets in deadlock as both side's battle computers matched the other, move for move.
The Movellans sought to break this logical impasse, landing on Skaro in pursuit of a Dalek force.

In War of the Daleks, it is revealed that the relationship between the Daleks and Movellans isn’t quite as it appears here, but is instead part of a plan to prevent the destruction of Skaro in Remembrance of the Daleks.

The Movellans have captured a number of high-ranking Daleks (including some members of the Supreme Council) during the war, and as part of their interrogation, have modified these with mind control implants.

Yet despite this fact, and despite the fact that the Movellans had made it perfectly clear in “Destiny of the Daleks,”; that they intended to invade the galaxy, they are never heard from in the series again.

The Daleks tried to win the war by recovering Davros, but were thwarted by the Fourth Doctor, Tyssan, and Movellan commander, Sharrel.
The fate of the Movellans is unknown, but it is likely that their over-reliance on logic caused them to be defeated by the Empire when they actually attempted their invasion of the human space.

This highly anticipated exhibition of Pedro De Movellan's recent sculptures marks the Gallery's fourth one-man show of this increasingly sought-after kinetic sculpture.
His work demonstrates the refined perfectionism of the master craftsman's hand: the sleek curve of carefully worked metal, wooden elements with gleaming surface reflections and color, and calculated joins that yield solid construction and graceful movement.
Applying this standard to themes often referenced from nature, De Movellan repeatedly creates kinetic works that combine the organic grace of naturally occurring forms with the refined precision of man-made machinery.

The first lesson in human-robot relations, says Javier Movellan, director of the laboratory and leader of the experiment, is that 10- to 24-month-olds are a tough crowd.
The problem is that engineers have sorely underestimated the supreme difficulty of designing machines that could anticipate human social behaviour enough to perform at the level of a child's brain.
He is also planning experiments that would program RUBI to become a substitute teacher for autistic children who, as part of their treatment, must be repetitively drilled to learn basic social skills, such as maintaining eye contact, which healthy children would pick up automatically.
