The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was founded in 1999 as the official opposition party to the Zanu-PF party led by Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe.
The proposed change would have limited future presidents to two terms, but as it was not retroactive, Mugabe could have stood for another two terms.
On 9-11 March 2002, the MDC's presidential candidate and leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, was defeated by Mugabe in the 2002 race after being charged with treason for allegedly plotting to assassinate Mugabe.

With a divided congress the most likely outcome, the new president will have "relatively limited powers" and will have to be disposed to compromise.
Since change is "a necessary part of the democratic process," an orderly handover of power to a legitimately elected opponent would be President Ernesto Zedillo's "greatest achievement," the paper concluded.

One person asked if Tsvangirai was democratically elected, was there a congress or was he appointed by a handful, the answer is yes he was elected by the pple at a congress in Chitungwiza at the Aquatic Centre 1999 and i was there and there were buses from Harare for free.
Understandably MDC is fighting f or a change in gorvenance which has a leadership that does not want to resign despite failure and being atraitor to its people.
Mr Tsvangirai should admit despite being a gentleman that MDC under his leadership has not done much to progress peole voted for MDC because it was the only formidable and much organised of all the opposition parties.

The physical measures are fairly obvious: bombing the Daily News, threatening the Judiciary, murdering, beating and detaining members of the MDC, forcing farmers off the land, assaulting and displacing thousands of farm workers and raiding businesses and industry.
