		Central Station, a Brazilian movie released in the beginning of 1999, shows a poor and retired teacher who writes letters in the Rio de Janeiro train station.
		I could recognize some of the Brazilian problems: illiteracy, security, abandoned kids, traffic of children, dirty cities, undeveloped regions, violence, etc. But the saddest thing to think about is that a lot of people could have the same reaction that Dora had first.
		The movie is like a prize for Brazilians because the world is recognizing our art and our artists.

		The central railroad station of the title is located in Rio de Janeiro, where a rather shopworn and cynical woman, Dora (Fernanda Montenegro), writes, but does not send, letters for illiterate people aching to communicate with their loved ones.
		Incidentally, the subtitles for Central Station are in an easy-to-read yellow that are often placed on the matted fl bottom off the picture.

		South Central is not as gorey as Menace II Society, so even older adults will like it, but it is still a great movie for teenagers and 20 year olds as well.
		The movie is so sad that it's funny -- especially the dimwittedness of the slapstick "Duece Gang." Watch this movie when it comes on the USA network in the wee hours of the morning, if you want a cure for your insomnia.

		It's interesting that the last internationally recognised film to come out of the country was 1981's Pixote which also centred on a tough world seen through the eyes of a young boy and his friendship with a prostitute (played by Central Station's Marilia Pera).
		The elderly character in Central Station is not a prostitute by trade, but she is certainly by nature.
		If this movie doesn´t tug your heartstrings, then you have to be dead.
