Movie palace - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Movie palace is a US English synonym for movie theater, but nowadays usually used within the USA for the grand cinemas of the 1910s to 1940s, contrasting with modern multiplexes.
The Regent Theater in New York City, opened in 1913, is usually cited as the first movie palace, and its success in drawing the upper middle class to the movies spurred others to follow suit.
As their name implies, movie palaces, like other products of the age, were advertised to "make the average citizen feel like royalty."[1] While inscribed with democratic sayings and patriotic imagery, they consciously referenced the grandeur of aristocratic Europe and were often decorated in European fashion.

A History of the American Movie Palace
By taking the movies out of the "fleapits" and into "proper" halls that were befitting patronage of refined gentlemen and ladies, it was hoped that someday the fledgling industry would be held in the same high regard as the other "arts"; ballet, symphony, and opera.
The movie palaces not only faced competition from the evil television, but that also faced direct competition from the theaters that were popping up in the suburbs and a new form of theater that would go on to become another great American icon, the Drive-In Theater.
Just like the movie palaces they competed with, the property they resided on became highly valued real estate and a lot of them were torn up for other developments.

Michael's Moviepalace: Classic Movies and More
The film is set on a passenger jet where the mixed bag of travelers (psychiatrist, politician, arms dealer, space scientist, etc) are discussing the sad state of the world--wars, assassination, suicide terrorists--while the plane is flying through an increasingly apocalyptic-looking blood-red sky, and birds begin suicidally smashing themselves against the plane windows.
All that makes the movie a nice thick Gothic soup, watered down a bit by a low budget and a sub-par English dubbing (though apparently there is a recent DVD release in Spanish with English subtitles).
The movie clearly had a B-budget, and most of that money went to the special effects, so the sets are threadbare and the acting is modest at best.

 Movie - Gunner Palace
Watching Gunner Palace, I initially wondered whether the filmmakers, Michael Tucker (no relation) and Petra Epperlein, were like the people who used to spit on Vietnam veterans when they returned home.
It becomes clear, as Gunner Palace proceeds, that the filmmakers don’t intend to exploit the soldiers (indeed, Tucker was once a reservist himself, his father, a Vietnam veteran), but the film is inept at conveying in what sense it’s on the soldiers’ side.
There’s an abrupt stop about an hour into the movie when Tucker goes home and trains the camera on his refrigerator, chatting tritely about the culture shock he experiences upon leaving Iraq, and about how glad he is to be safe again.
