While the dictionary definition of a trilogy is "a group of three dramatic or literary works related in subject or theme," most typical movie trilogies feature a similar character or cast of characters and a running story.
Yet, the movie, which had been considered a trilogy and packaged as a trilogy since 1989, was given the good ol' direct to video sequel treatment with 2002's Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor, which had Jim Markovic directing.
Terry Gillam's Dream Trilogy or Childhood Trilogy (both of which are technically "unofficial" as well) consists of Time Bandits, Brazil and Adventures of Baron Munchausen and each represent one of the three stages of man, which are youth, middle age, and elderly and the impact of imagination on each.

Movie Trilogies - The Power of the Trilogy
The middle of a trilogy might, at first, be promoted as a sequel, but in many cases, is simply a foundation for a dramatic conclusion in the third piece of the trilogy.
If a trilogy is being filmed, it would be in the studio’s best interest to release this information ahead of time, as is the case of many popular movies based on fantasy novels or comic books.
Some movies seem to start as a sequel, but movie producers feel perhaps there is a market for a third installment, so the second movie feels more like the first half of a complete movie.

As we saw from the Matrix trilogy, the first one totally ruled, setting us up for utter disappointment for the second, and by the time the third came out, several of us actually wanted it to stop.
A good trilogy should always improve from the first to the second, and most of the time be merely solid for the third.
A continuation of the first movie is not necessary, but returning characters and character traits ARE for a successful movie trilogy. For example, by the time American Weding came out, they only had about three of the original characters that had been in American Pie.

 Examining Movie Trilogies
The movie trilogy has become a common phenomenon in modern cinema, primarily because, all too often, three is the maximum number of quality films possible to spawn from a particular story formula.
Besides, the notion of three interconnected movies has an integrity that appeals to sophisticated movie-goers, who like an intricately textured, extended epic and the opportunity to make their own connections between events in the trilogy's individual installments released over a period of several years.
The second film in the Ripley trilogy is completely different from the one-alien-in-spaceship premise of film one, in that Ripley teams with a group of high-tech space Marines to investigate a loss of contact at a human colony on the planet where Ripley's crew found the first alien.

A movie can be good and have 3 parts, not saying that being a "not trilogy" makes it bad (but Highlander did suck after the first) but to package it as a Trilogy should be an achievement, not just 3 separate movies.
There are still some great movies that have 3 or more in their franchise, but they dont qualify as a trilogy.

Some such film trilogies faired well through their expanded scope and others simply became excuses to revisit ideas that seemed fresh and original once, but lost their luster with each new part in the story.
And, although the story of the trilogy really does seem to center on the ring and the hobbits that carry it, The Two Towers is the time for this small band to really shine.
The ability of the movie to follow a large battle, while still concentrating on smaller characters and events, is a wonder of editing.
