It is located in the eponymous district of Moyobamba Province in the San Martín Region, of which it is the capital.
Some 3,500 species of orchid are native to the area, which has led to the city's nickname of The City of Orchids.

Annie Soper was the first Protestant missionary to bring the gospel to the city of Moyobamba, a city in the foothills of the Andes in what is known as the ‘high jungle’ of Peru.
Her endeavours, back in the 1920s, were focussed on a medical evangelistic ministry which resulted in the formation of the first protestant congregation in the city — a congregation which today forms part of the Evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed Church in Peru.
The Lord had other plans and thanks to the efforts and generosity of the Lord’s people both in Moyobamba and beyond, the church was able to build premises that allowed the school to continue to grow.

Situated just above the Río Mayo in a hot, humid, tropical forest environment, the town was founded in 1539 by Don Alonso de Alvarado on one of his earliest explorations into the Amazon jungle.
As you can see today, however, Urzúa failed in his attempt, and Moyabamba is much the same as any other jungle town - hot, muddy and laid back, with a cathedral and a few, but not many, decent hotels.
Note that you need to obtain a free permit from Moyobamba's National Institute of Culture, block 3, Jirón Benavides, before visiting the falls.

To get to Moyabamba from Chachapoyas, take a colectivo along the Mayo Valley to Pedro Ruiz ($3, a 2hr trip), then take another colectivo to Rioja ($10, a 7hr trip), where you need to change to yet another colectivo to Moyobamba ($1.50, a 1hr trip).
Moyobamba is also served by the airstrip at nearby Rioja.
