MOZDOK, a town of Russia, in Caucasia, and in the province of Terek, on the left bank of the river Terek, 605 ft. above sealevel, in 43° 41' N. and 44° 39' E., 50 m.
Built in 1763 by the prince of Kabardia, Mozdok soon became an important point in the Russian advance towards the Caucasus, and was fortified.
The melons and water-melons of Mozdok are widely famed; and vine-growing and silkworm breeding prosper.

Situated in the extreme north of the republic, Mozdok is connected to the rest of North Ossetia by a narrow isthmus.
And, after Mozdok was assimilated into North Ossetia, the proportion of ethnic Ossetians across the republic dropped to 50 per cent - a level that remained consistent until the 1980s.
Both geographically and politically, Mozdok had always enjoyed a large degree of autonomy from the regional capital and, shortly before the Ossetian-Ingush conflict of 1992, the strip of land joining Mozdok with North Ossetia became almost impassable for ethnic Ossetians and has remained so ever since.
