Sculpture of St Nicholas of Mozhaisk by UNKNOWN MASTER, Russian
St Nicholas, sculptured full-length, originally with a sword in his right hand and the sculptural representation of a fortress in his left, personifies the formidable defender of the town of Mozhaisk.
The cult of St Nicholas of Mozhaisk was popular in various parts of Russia.
The sculpture in the Hermitage collection was brought from Kargopol, an important acquisition of the Moscow tsars in the 16th century, in no way inferior to the other northern trade centres.

Mozhaisk, only 100 km west of Russia’s capital and the oldest city in the Moscow Oblast, has simply been left in the dust, with only its crumbling ancient churches signifying that here once existed a dynamic town.
This is a typical feature of Mozhaisk — the beauty of its buildings in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscapes, which creates both an urban and rural feel.
The bus ride from Mozhaisk to Borodino takes 20 minutes, but it is better to take a gypsy cab because the buses are shabby and intervals are long.

AEGiS-AFP News: Russia-prisons: Russian "model" jail struggles with disease, lack of funds - July 11, 2002
MOZHAISK, Russia, July 11 (AFP) - Squeezing 20 inmates into a 15 square meter (160 square foot) cell may appear to make for unbearably cramped conditions, but by Russian standards it's a better deal than you could expect elsewhere.
Mozhaisk prisoners suffering from TB are not kept in separate cells from other inmates, but a jail official claimed this did not really pose a problem.
But although the situation may not be quite as desperate as in other comparable facilities, Mozhaisk -- one of 11 Russian prisons where women are allowed to keep children under age three -- still struggles with the same daunting problems that plague most Russian prisons.
