  MP3Pro vs. MP3
The leader here is MP3Pro, and although its AFC was much different from the original in highs, the sound, in general, was excellent.
The MP3Pro has a better 3D sound, the MP3 has a higher resolution and accuracy, and the WMA is a bit too "resonant".
If you remember, the idea of the MP3Pro (or rather of the SBR technology) is to cut off highs so that a frequency range will be more narrow; further the highs are to be restored at the decoding stage according to information on lower frequencies.

Mp3PRO - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RCA was the only company to offer portable players compatible with mp3PRO, but they have dropped support for the format.
To play mp3PRO files with the full sample rate in Windows, users are required to install additional software.
Limitations with getting a functional Linux player are largely due to RCA not releasing the mp3PRO source code, even after discontinuing support for the format.

 New high-quality MP3 format debuts | CNET News.com
While MP3Pro files will work with software and devices based on the current MP3 format, they may sound worse on systems designed for standard MP3s because of differences in the way the sound is recorded.
MP3Pro uses two separate streams of data to improve audio quality, only one of which can be detected by older players.
The MP3Pro format will be completely compatible with past MP3 files, so a new player will still be able to play songs encoded, or "ripped," with earlier technology, the companies say.

Anybody remember hearing about mp4 and mp3PRO???? - TechIMO Forums
Mp3PRO was brought up at the "old place", i think RCA had a player for it.
Mp3pro files were also backwards compatable with mp3 but they played back at 22khz (instead of 44khz) when played thru a normal mp3 player.
Even a 128kb mp3pro, which should be equivalent to 164kb or so, sound really squashed and flat compared to an mp3 of similar bit-rate.

mp3PRO is an evolution of MP3, developed by the original geniuses behind the world's most popular audio file format.
Using "Spectral Band Replication" (SBR), 64k mp3PRO files contain the original (limited) MP3 audio data as well as higher frequency SBR data.
There's no easy way to tell if a file is mp3PRO or not by simply 'looking' at it.

New tech promises more music using less memory | CNET News.com
MP3Pro is being developed by Coding Technologies, a spinoff of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, which shares patent rights to the MP3 format with Thomson.
Thomson and Fraunhofer charge licensing fees for the use of MP3, and with MP3Pro the companies may be looking to create a format compelling enough for music distributors to buy.
With MP3Pro, Thomson is challenging competitors such as Microsoft and RealNetworks, which have released formats that some industry analysts say are superior to Thomson's current MP3 format.

mp3PRO is widely expected to be adopted by equipment makers and consumers because it is compatible with the highly popular MP3 standard.
Since mp3PRO requires less bandwidth than MP3 it will also allow streaming Internet audio to be used reliably over lower speed connections, allowing more users to take advantage of Internet radio services.
During the coding of the file the audio spectrum is separated into two bands, one for low frequencies and one for high frequencies.

In 2001 Thomson announced the arrival of mp3PRO, the next generation of mp3.
Using advanced psychoacoustics techniques and music structure analysis, mp3PRO creates files that are more compact than original mp3 files, with equal or better sound quality and complete backwards and forwards compatibility.
New or upgraded mp3PRO decoders will tap into this part of the stream and put the two bands back together, resulting in the full audio bandwidth.

If MP3Pro at 80 or 96 could achieve MP3 128 or better quality, I would find it very intriguing for portable use - which is where I listen to most of my music.
I suppose that the overall quality a good mp3 at 130 kbps can't be reached with mp3pro, especially at 80 or 96 kbps.
MP3Pro 64 is NOT MP3 128 despite the claims.

 mp3PRO Audio File Format
The MP3PRO file format was developed by Coding Technologies to provide enhanced compression to the MP3 system.
MP3PRO was designed after MP3s had been in use for a while, and many users had sacrificed the high quality sound in order to create smaller files for use in internet radios and on portable devices.
Also, since most players and software packages do not support MP3PRO, using this as a file storage system might ensure that your songs are unplayable on most players you could want to buy.

MP3PRO - MisticRiver :: For iriver Enthusiasts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
MP3pro tries to restore some of the high frequencies lost at low bitrates by hiding some additional informations in the low frequency range as far as I remember.
Anyways, MP3pro only sounds better at very low bit rates which can not carry high frequencies (reproducing them naturally is another story), which is below 128, and I'd doubt the result with those bitrates even with MP3pro is very high quality.
It may be no real acid-test of legacy MP3PRO decodes - but i had a CL JB1 (A Creative Labs Nomad/DAP jukebox) driving some speakers as background audio at StuffLive last year just as a kinda impromptu test of what uber mp3 enthusiasts call 'inferior' mp3 encoding.

 mp3licensing.com - About mp3PRO Compatibility
The most important fact about mp3PRO is that mp3PRO is completely backwards and forwards compatible with mp3.
There is also no need to include an mp3 encoder and an mp3PRO encoder in one single product, since the mp3PRO encoder is able to produce mp3 and mp3PRO encoded content.
The number of channels will not change whether such mp3PRO content is played on an mp3PRO system or on an mp3 system, in case of "mono" and "stereo" content.

The MP3Pro audio format took the stage Thursday with the formal release of an audio encoder/decoder from Thomson Multimedia.
The extension to the popular MP3 format uses a new algorithm to widen the audio bandwidth; the effect is to either improve the quality of the compressed audio, or allow it to be stored in a smaller file size.
The bitrates supported by MP3Pro are, in mono: 24-, 32-, and 40-bit; and in stereo, 32-, 40-, 48-, 56-, 64-, 80-, and 96-Kbps are supported.

 MP3Pro Decoder? - Hydrogenaudio Forums
If you are going to use the Winamp MP3Pro plugin to decode these files and you wish to play them back using FB2K, I would recommend you recompress them losslessly or leave them as WAV format.
Decoding without an mp3pro decoder won't work at all, because the standard mp3 decoder decodes only part of the stream, resulting in what seems like highly degraded quality.
This would let you use the Winamp MP3Pro decoder, but you would have to modify the binary with a hex editor first to change the extension to something else to avoid clashing with mpglib.
