Mrs Ples and our distant relatives
"Mrs Ples" is the nickname for a fossil that was discovered by Dr Robert Broom of the Transvaal Museum at the Sterkfontein Caves in 1947.
The possibility that "Mrs Ples" was really a male is currently being given attention, based in part on studies of prominent ridges ("anterior pillars") associated with the roots of canine teeth, analysed by CT scans.

"Mrs Ples" is the nickname of a fossil skull which is believed by many scientists to represent a distant relative of all humankind.
"Mrs Ples" is almost human in the sense that she could walk upright, like humans, but she had a small brain, similar in size to that of a modern chimpanzee.
Mrs Ples and Sts 14: Dr Francis Thackeray and French colleagues have proposed a hypothesis that a partial skeleton of Australopithecus africanus, otherwise known simply by its catalogue number Sts 14, may belong to the same individual represented by Mrs Ples (catalogued as Sts 5).

"We'll still refer to 'her' affectionately as Mrs Ples." A type of ceremony to change the name might be an idea, as long as it did not involve a baptism with water, Thackeray said.

Mrs Ples is the popular name of the world’s most complete skull of Australopithecus africanus, a species which is well represented by fossils from Sterkfontein in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, situated approximately 70 kilometres southwest of Pretoria.
Mrs Ples was discovered by Dr Robert Broom and John Robinson in April 1947.
Recent X-ray analysis of the roots of the teeth of Mrs Ples has suggested that it was a sub-adult, at the same stage of development as the specimen represented by the partial skeleton.
