Born on 27 March 1927 in Baku, a city on the west shore of the Caspian Sea, Mstislav Rostropovich began musical studies in early childhood with his parents.
Due to international recording contracts and foreign tours, Mstislav Rostropovich also came to the attention of the West.
Mstislav Rostropovich and his family departed from the Soviet Union in 1974 in the midst of a controversy that attracted international attention.

Rostropovitch's actions had long been a concern to the Soviet authorities: he had staunchly supported Shostakovich when the authorities denounced him; when Prokoviev was ousted from the Moscow Conservatory, in defiance, Rostropovitch, too, left.
When the last tank left Czechoslovakian soil, Rostropovitch was there, performing the concert he had promised to give the nation, as a token of his joy at their liberation.

Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich (Мстисла́в Леопо́льдович Ростропо́вич) (born March 27, 1927) is a Russian cellist and conductor, considered to be one of the greatest living cellists.
He is also the director and founder of many music festivals (Aldeburgh, Rostropovitch Festival), while still performing with some of the most famous musicians such as (Richter and Horowitz).
His impromptu performance during the Fall of the Berlin Wall (November 1989), as events unfolded, earned him international fame and was shown on television throughout the world.

The 1995 Polar Music Prize has been awarded to the Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovitch for a unique artistic achievement distinguished by originality, independence, fluency and vigour of interpretation and instrumental mastery.
