The national nonprofit conservation organization purchased 100 buffalo for the Fort Peck Tribes of Northwestern Montana, returning the species to the Reservation for the first time since it was exterminated there in 1872.
Formerly, the buffalo were the basis of the tribes’ economies and held great spiritual significance for these societies.
The buffalo were purchased thanks to a generous grant from the Murr Family Foundation based in Walla Walla, Washington.

Mt Buffalo is an popular skiing destination (mostly cross-country) during winter, and in summer a popular launching place for people hang-gliding off what must be 500m+ sheer cliff-face.
Also worthwhile is the Mt Buffalo Chalet which offers devonshire teas while being entertained by a rag-time jazz-quartet during the summer months.
Having camped at the base of it in the Mt Buffalo Caravan Park on and off over the past 20 years, and after extensive testing, I consider it to be the best mountain pass in the area (Better than Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller).

At the start of the day the slopes were terrible they were like ice, which is very difficult to control yourself on and then by the end of the day the "snow" had melted and there were patches where the dirt was showing through.

Guidebook(s): The 1996 Jeremy Boreham/David Brereton "Mt Buffalo, A Rockclimbers Guide" is the only guidebook still found in shops, but unfortunately there are quite a few niggly problems in it, eg imprecise descriptions of access to routes (particularly in the Gorge), inaccurate route lengths, and failing to mention dangerous downclimbs (eg Chalwell Galleries).
The Details: Buffalo is perhaps the best established granite area in Australia.
