Eccles National Park is 8 km west of Macarthur, which is 35 km south of Hamilton on the Port Fairy Road.
The vegetation is similar to that of Mt.
Eccles is a great place for a picnic and well worth spending a couple of hours on the way from Hamilton to Port Fairy.

The remains of the system of eel aquaculture in the Mt Eccles/Lake Condah area demonstrate a transition from a forager society to a society that practiced husbandry of fresh water fish (Builth 2002, 2003).
The landscape of the Tyrendarra lava flow in the Mt Eccles/Lake Condah area is of outstanding heritage value because it provides a particularly clear example of the way that Aboriginal people used their environment as a base for launching attacks on European settlers and escaping reprisal raids during frontier conflicts (Clark 1990a, 1990b; Builth 2003).
Mt Eccles is an ancestral creation being Budj bim and the scoria cones are described as tung att – teeth belong it (Clark 1990a; 1990b; Builth 2003).

The first European sighting of Mount Eccles was probably by Matthew Flinders in 1802 when he recorded a 'round hill' visible from the sea.
It was originally named Mt Eeles after a war veteran and was misnamed by a mapmaker (not me !) in the 1850's.
Swimming in the lake is permitted and there is a walk which begins at the carpark and goes around the rim of the crater and takes around 2 hours, and a walk to the lake estimated at 45 mins.

In her Australia Day address at Branxholme, Dr Bulith said department officials were impressed by the archaeology of the Gunditjamra eel fisheries on the Mt Eccles lava flow 'and what this represents on a world scale'.
Dr Bulith said the area that would be most likely nominated at present consisted of Aboriginal-owned lands, Mt Eccles national park and other crown land.

In response to the very recent radio tracking carried out at Mount Eccles “both surgical sterilisation and relocation of koalas from Mount Eccles NP have ceased.” PV also refers to the “cumulative stresses of relocation and sterilisation, and therefore the risk of mortality” that it recently sought to address on Snake Island.
The AKF has learned that most of the koalas tracked at Mt Eccles subsequently died or were taken into veterinary care.
Like many other habitat remnants, Mt Eccles has been cut off from what would have been formerly connected habitat, today’s koalas are unable to naturally disperse to other bushland.

Land at Lake Condah, Mt Eccles and Tyrendarra has become the first in Australia to receive nomination for National Heritage Listing due to Indigenous values under new laws that came into effect this year.
The lava flow area is also significant for its place in the 20-year Eumeralla Wars, when it was used as a fortress by Gunditjmara people, with stones making the area inaccessible to Europeans on horseback.
A 7880 ha area in the Mt Eccles-Lake Condah area, including the Mount Eccles National Park, the Stones State Fauna Reserve, Muldoons Aboriginal Land, Allambie Aboriginal Land and the Condah Mission, as well as the Tyrendarra Indigenous Protected Area, have been nominated for listing, along with the Lady Julia Percy Island State Fauna Reserve.
