Mthatha - The African National Congress is to embark on what it calls a "sustained campaign" to strengthen local government in the coming year and over the next decade.
The announcement was made on Saturday in a policy statement released by the organisation's national executive committee to coincide with the ANC's 93rd anniversary rally on the outskirts of Mthatha.
The NEC said the party's national general council, a body which gathers in the interregnum between national conferences, would when it met in July have to pay "particular attention" to strengthening local government, which was critical to reconstruction and development.

Mthatha - One boy has died and eight others were admitted to Mthatha general hospital after they fell ill at a circumcision school in the area, the Eastern Cape health department said on Monday.
Health department officials went to investigate the school at Link village outside Mthatha after being informed by community members of possible problems.
During the June/July season 23 boys died in the bush." About half those deaths were in the Libode area, east of Mthatha.

In MThaTha, the Department of Orthopaedics consists of one board certified orthopaedic surgeon, two Senior Medical Officers, four first year Medical Officers, and one rotating intern.
A medical school has been present in MThaTha since 1988, and there is currently a group of fifth year medical students partaking in an intensive orthopaedic course which lasts four to six weeks, with approximately ten medical students in the course at a time.
Volunteers who are either board eligible or board certified; retired or in active practice; and those with academic appointment as well as private practice physicians are accepted for this program.
