  Mu'tazilis
The school of the Mu'tazilis can be dated back to the schism involving Caliph Ali, when Islam divided into three main orientations, Sunni, Shi'i and Khariji.
The Mu'tazilis were the first Muslims to identify heresy and to challenge non-Muslim thinkers.
At first, the opponents of the Mu'tazilis were the traditionalists, who claimed that the only way of understanding Islam was through the literal reading of the Koran and the hadiths, an approach called bilaa kayfa, "without questions".

  Mu'tazili at AllExperts
Though Mu'tazilis relied on logic and different aspects of Greek philosophy, the truths of Islam were their starting point and ultimate reference (e.g., Walzer, 1967; Craig, 2000).
Mu'tazilis believed that the first obligation on humans, specifically adults in full possession of their mental faculties, is to use their intellectual power to ascertain the existence of God, and to become knowledgeable of his attributes.
Nevertheless, Divine self-restraint in Mu'tazili discourse is because of, not a negation of, Divine omnipotence.

 Mu'tazili
Mu'tazili theology originated in the 8th century in al-Basrah when Wasil ibn Ata left the teaching lessons of al-Hasan al-Basri after a theological dispute; thus he and his followers were labelled Mu'tazili.
Later, Mu'tazilis called themselves Ahl al-'Adl wa al-Tawhid ("People of Justice and Monotheism") based on the theology they advocated, which expanded on the logic and rationalism of Greek philosophy, seeking to combine them with Islamic doctrines and show that the two were inherently compatible.
Mu'tazili theology developed in the 8th century, and by the early 9th century became the official court belief of the Abbasid Caliphate, when it was officially adopted by the Caliph Al-Ma'mun.

 Qur'an--Beliefnet.com
Around the time of the sunni-shia split, there also emerged a group known as the mutazili, who believed the Quran to be a created and human, not eternal and divine, document.
It was not brought forth in a vacuum either, it was born in a time and place with a history, a context, a culture.
To suggest the Quran dropped from heaven, perfect and free of bias is tantamount, according to the Mutazili, to calling the Qruan a god.

In particular, the Mutazili theology originated in the 8th century in Basra, Iraq, and was based on the concept which sought to ground the Islamic creedal system in reason.
Though Mutazilis relied on logic and different aspects of Greek philosophy, the truths of Islam were their starting point and ultimate reference.
By the end of the ninth century, Mutazilis, who can be seen as rationalists were vehemently criticised by the traditionalists, however, the dichotomy between the two was not so stark, since both groups relied on balancing reason with divine revelation.

He drew on the ideas of the Mu'tazilis of the 800s and this is where the Pakistani Fazlur Rahman Malak came in, pursuing the same ideas.
The follow on from this position is that for the Asharis and Muslim orthodoxy, the ethics of the uncreated Qur'an as written and understood come by revelation alone and cannot be reasoned.
The Mutazili's reply was that the ethics were approachable by reason, because the Qur'an is grounded in real human history.

 DAWN - Letters; October 23, 2006
Ms Zafar cites the 18th century European movement of ‘Enlightenment’ (which led a scientist to declare that if ignorance of nature gave birth to God, the knowledge of nature is calculated to destroy Him) and the Mutazili (Mutazilite) theology of the 8th century that tried to combine logic and Greek philosophy with Islam.
The Mutazilis were an elitist, minority group, whose excessive intellectualisation and denial of anthropomorphic notions of God “speaking or “sitting on a throne,” as averred by the Holy Quran, reduced the divine to a philosophical abstraction.
The Mutazilis faded away, other schools such as Ahle Hadith and the Asharites arose, as also a pre-dominance of Shariah, as propounded by the four Sunni schools, by the 10th century.

 Is There An "Athari" Aqida?
When the aqida of others is sound by these broad methodological standards, the Asharis and Maturidis would consider it sound beliefs; otherwise, they would criticize those points of belief or the underlying precepts that are unsound.
As for the criticism that some major Hanbalis held beliefs that smacked of anthropomorphism ['representation of God as having human form or traits'], this is true but unfair: it is also true that some Shafiis had such beliefs, and some were Mutazili rationalists; the same is also true of the Hanafi school.
However, what matters is the general case (al-`ibra li'l ghalib), and the overwhelming majority of Hanbalis had sound beliefs, as is the case in the other schools.

It emphasises that people may themselves think Juwayni is a mutazili, due to so many similarities, but he is clearly not, as he refuted them in his book al-irshad.
Remember Abu Hanifah was attacked very early on in his life, and was accused of being a Shia, an Alawi, A Murji'i, A Mutazili, by other scholars who were well reputed at the time, until later some of them actually fully examined his arguments in the cold light of day without emotions attached.
Juwayni suffered persecution at their hands, just because the hanafis were responsible for this, does not mean we reject Hanafis completly, we need to be less sweeping in our mentality, and more granular in examining arguments of other Muslims before jumping to accusations.

The White Path: Interview by To The Source: Fixing the Blindspot
Most Westerners think that Islam is divided between Sunnis and Shiites, but actually there was a much greater diversity in the past.
A third school was the Mutazili school, whose followers were also known as “rationalists” because they emphasized the importance of human reason in understanding the Koran.
But later on, mainstream Islam was dominated by the “traditionalists” who were more skeptical of reason and argued for an unquestioned following of the tradition of Prophet Muhammad.

These rationalists, known as Mutazilis, formed their own distinctive group; they also had a firm political commitment: like the Shiis, Mutazilis were highly critical of the luxury of the court and were frequently politically active against the establishment.
The Mutazilis took a middle road and withdrew (i'tazahu, to stand aloof) from an extreme position.
Like the Shiis, the Mutazilis declared that justice was of the essence of God: he could not wrong anybody; he could not enjoin anything contrary to reason.
