The establishment of a lighthouse at Muckle Flugga, which is the most northerly rock in the British Isles, was considered by the Commissioners as far back as 1851, but due to difficulties in determining the exact site for the Lighthouse, no work had been undertaken by 1854.
During the Crimean War the Commissioners were urged by the Government to erect a light at Muckle Flugga with a view to the protection of Her Majesty's ships.
It may be interesting to note that Robert Louis Stevenson, who was born in 1850, visited Muckle Flugga on 18 June 1869 with his father, Thomas Stevenson, Engineer to the Board and there is a school of thought that the Island of Unst influenced him in his writing of "Treasure Island".

Muckle Flugga is home to a lighthouse, built by Thomas and David Stevenson in 1854, originally to protect ships during the Crimean War.

This was originally built in 1855 as a shore base for the Muckle Flugga lighthouse, perched on an almost inaccessible 60m fin of rock north of Herma Ness.

From Bishop Rock on the edge of the Scilly Isles to Muckle Flugga to the north of the Shetlands they have helped to protect generations of sea farers from the hazards of these isolated rocks.
The Longstone is one of the most famous of British lights and it has attracted numerous paddlers to the north east hoping to visit this outer part of the Farnes.
Many of us still have a tick list of places we want to visit and I know that in common with lots of other paddlers, a trip past Muckle Flugga is high on the agenda as is a visit to the Smalls, which is the most isolated of all the Trinity House Lights.

The British ship S/S Polzella (4751GRT) was torpedoed 6 - 7 nautical miles north of Muckle Flugga by the German Submarine U 25.The whole crew of 37 were lost.
The Norwegian steamer D/S Enid of Trondheim, went to serach for survivers, none were found, but the same submarine torpedoed the Enid, and sunk her.
One of the lifeboats from the 'Swainby' later became roof of a shed at Kirkton, in Nordwick, Unst.

After 13 hours we are just under halfway to Muckle Flugga lighthouse in the Shetland Islands.
We need to position ourselves far enough right of course so that we can sail to Muckle Flugga without tacking as the wind backs around in front of us.This would add sailing distance.
The quicker they make it round Muckle Flugga the sooner they will meet the stronger winds, and the longer they are likely to remain in them on the western portion of their voyage.

Located on one of several rocky islets which lie off Herma Ness on the north coast of the Shetland island of Unst, Muckle Flugga is the most northerly lighthouse in the United Kingdom.
The construction was the work of lighthouse engineers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87), the latter being the father of author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) who visited with his father in 1869.
Originally known as North Unst lighthouse, it was renamed Muckle Flugga in 1964.

Hermaness was declared a National Nature Reserve in 1955 by the Nature Conservancy, and it is run as a nature reserve to this day by the Conservancy's successor in Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH).
SNH have a visitor centre in the old Muckle Flugga Shore Station at Burrafirth and they employ a seasonal warden for the reserve.
Although it is one of the most northerly points in Britain, with views of the most northerly lighthouse at Muckle Flugga and Out Stack, Hermaness is most famous as a seabird colony.
