It was during her final voyage, between Quebec and Liverpool with a cargo of timber, that the Ayrshire encountered a storm and was wrecked on the southern end of MuckleRoe, Shetland, c.
MuckleRoe is situated on the west side of the Shetland mainland in the middle of a large enclosed bay created by Northmavine to the north and the ‘West Side’ to the south.
That night the anchor chains of the Ayrshire broke and she was run under bare poles into Gilsabight, MuckleRoe, where she was driven ashore in the middle of a snow storm.

It is connected by a bridge which some may think is cheating for an island.
The tarmac road peters out at the southern tip of MuckleRoe: Town Loch lies at the northern-western tip, at the end of a twisting track gouged into a moonscape of rotted granite and peat bog.
Anchoring the dive boat in a sheltered gully surrounded on three sides by towering cliffs, which are cut into by numerous caverns and ravines, I always have mixed feelings of adrenalin and excitement, not knowing what I'll come across.
Before my first of many dives at this gully on the northern edge of the island of MuckleRoe (known as 'Big Red', after the colour of its stone), I'd simply heard that it was 'pretty damn good': it has always lived up to its reputation.
I've dived at quite a few other, equally spectacular sites along the eastern cliffs of MuckleRoe and Papa Stour, but I keep returning to these gullies: they're the most picturesque I've dived in for a long time and, visually, they're everything an underwater photographer could ask for.
The creels were developed relatively recently in the 19th century, and were used on the west side of Shetland only, in MuckleRoe and Aithsting.
The use of creels evolved from the traditional Shetland method of carrying quantities of peat, using a combination of straw kishies and meshies -(baskets and nets,) balanced on each side of the animal from a klibber, a traditional wooden pack saddle.
Creels were used until 1940 and these rare examples originated in Hivdiwick, MuckleRoe.
Little Holm is an island in the middle of Yell Sound about 2.5 km (1.5 mi) south of Muckle Holm.
Muckle Holm is an island in the middle of Yell Sound about 4 km (2.5 mi) east of North Roe on Shetland Mainland and a similar distance west of West Sandwick on Yell.
MuckleRoe is a circular island southwest of Brae on the western side of Shetland Mainland.
On Sunday 24 December 1865 the anchor chains of the Ayrshire broke while she was sheltering in the lee of the land off the Swarbacks Minn and she was run under bare poles into Gilsabight, MuckleRoe, where she was driven ashore in the middle of a snow storm.
The fact that the Ayrshire broke here anchor chains before bing run in to Gilsabight probably means that her other anchors were lost before she was run ashore in Gilssabight.
